Job overview

Are you an enthusiastic band 5 or 6 nurse with an interest and passion for nutrition?  We are recruiting a nurse to join our Nutrition Nurse Specialist and Nutrition Nurse within the Nutrition and Dietetic Service.

You will be a senior staff nurse with previous experience caring for patients receiving artificial nutrition. This post, based on the Peterborough City Hospital site, has a requirement to work across sites to provide a Trust wide service.

Training and support will be provided to enable you to develop skills and knowledge in nutrition support, alongside promoting professional development into a specialist nursing role within the nutrition nurse team of the Nutrition and Dietetic service.  

  

The role requires commitment and enthusiasm in the speciality, an ability to deliver training, and an appetite to succeed and overcome challenges

 

This post supports health care professionals in managing and troubleshooting issues related to artificial nutrition. Has responsibility for delivering training programmes to support ward based nutrition standards, and assessing compliance with tube feeding competencies to ensure safe practice. Joining our 2 Nutrition Nurses you will work within the Nutrition & Dietetic Service. Base is negotiable, but with requirement to work across sites to provide a Trust wide service.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide specialist clinical management, education and support for patients and staff regarding artificial feeding and nutrition support, acting as a resource, role model and clinical expert in the field of nutrition
  • Provide high standards of individualised care to patients requiring nutrition support.
  • Support the nutrition nurse specialist monitoring the safety, quality of care and treatment of patients.
  • Educate, guide and supervise other health care professionals, patients and their relatives in hospital to understand the speciality area and aspects of care.
  • Take responsibility for their own evidence based practice, to assess, plan and implement care given to patients within this specialist area.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Current NMC registration first level nurse
  • Educated to diploma or degree level, if no degree demonstrates working at a level equivalent to this
  • Recognised teaching qualification or previous experience of teaching and assessment
  • Evidence of professional development and CPD in enteral and/or parenteral nutrition
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised teaching qualification or previous experience of teaching and assessment

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of NICE guidance, legislation and standards relating to clinical practice in nutrition
  • Advanced knowledge of complex feeding methods & interventions
  • Knowledge of and interest in Nutrition in health and ill health
Desirable criteria
  • sound knowledge of complex feeding methods & interventions

  • Able to work as a team member and independently
  • High level of clinical reasoning
  • Ability to present information in a logical and concise manner
  • Seeks & uses professional support appropriately
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of management a patient case load within an acute setting
  • Nursing experience of artificial nutrition support in a surgical / medical setting
  • Demonstrate evidence of working within a Multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of and competent to insert nasogastric tubes
Desirable criteria
  • Current extended skills of Nasogastric tube placement and administration of parenteral nutrition

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
