Job overview

We are looking for an organised, motivated experienced Payroll Officer to help deliver a timely, accurate and professional payroll service across the Trust. You will support the processing of weekly and monthly payrolls, apply complex pay regulations and ensure staff are paid correctly in line with NHS terms and conditions and statutory requirements. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys detailed work, problem‑solving and delivering great customer service.

Main duties of the job

In this role, you will:

Process payroll data accurately and efficiently within set deadlines.

Apply statutory rules for tax, National Insurance, sickness, maternity, paternity and adoption payments.

Validate documentation, check outputs and maintain accurate payroll records.

Respond to staff and manager enquiries, offering clear and supportive advice.

Process previous service enquiries, contract checks and absence updates.

Support the distribution of payslips and payroll documentation.

Assist in training new colleagues and contribute to continuous improvement.

Ensure all work complies with Trust processes and statutory guidelines.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • IPPM Foundation Level or NVQ level 3 in Payroll Administration or Equivalent Experience.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience working in a multi-disciplinary payroll department.
  • Experience of using a computerised integrated HR and Payroll System.
  • Prioritising, planning and organising own tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Working within guidelines.
  • Experience of dealing with difficult situations and confrontations.
  • Data entry experience and documentation.
  • Experience of IT packages – Microsoft office.
  • Experience of producing documents to a high standard.
Desirable criteria
  • NHS payroll experience.
  • Experience of ESR Payroll System.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of confidentiality and data protection.
  • Sound knowledge of office procedures.
  • Understanding of customer service.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages.
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation regarding PAYE, NI, SSP and Maternity Pay.

  • Conversant with NHS Terms and Conditions.
