Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Upper GI and Emergency General Surgery, based at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.  

Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales.  The basic salary range for this post is £110,240 per annum to £160,951 per annum.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full.  In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the day-to-day work of the department of upper GI surgery and will have dedicated main theatre time, outpatient clinics and day surgery operating lists. Independent endoscopy accreditation would be of value.   The appointee will participate in the unselected emergency on-call (currently 1:8 – lower GI and General), contribute to ‘planned emergency operating lists’ (SDEC lists) and will be expected and supported to develop a managerial / teaching or clinical improvement role within emergency general or trauma surgery.

Academic interests will be encouraged; research and teaching in collaboration with Cardiff University’s School of Medicine will be expected.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • On GMC Specialist Register for specialty* / Specialty Registrar with CCT due within 6 months of interview date (Note that Portfolio Pathway applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application)
Desirable criteria
  • Higher academic qualification e.g. MD or MS

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad training and experience in General Surgery
  • Training and independent operating experience in the diagnosis and treatment of the breath of benign and malignant upper GI conditions including minimal access surgery.
  • Training and independent operating experience in general surgical emergencies
  • Ability to independently run the acute surgical take
  • Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working as part of a major trauma team
  • Experience of working within a surgical same day emergency care unit
  • JAG accredited in Upper GI Endoscopy
  • Post-CCT fellowship training in cancer / complex benign UGI

Skills

  • Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working
  • Effective and demonstrable communication skills

Clinical Governance

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
