Senior Test Engineer

Digital Health and Care Wales is an ambitious organisation created by Welsh Government to lead on the digital transformation of health and care. It builds on the digital architecture and national services put in place by the NHS Wales Informatics Service over the past decade.

The organisation will lead on large-scale developments that make a significant difference to the people of Wales as well as to health and care professionals, such as expansion of the digital patient record and the creation of a National Data Resource. Job overview

Working alongside our Test Team Principal for Integration, you will lead a specialist team testing national SQL databases, demographics services, APIs and message integration platforms. 

Working closely with product teams, you will: 

  • Define the long-term test strategy and tooling. 

  • Apply a risk and requirements-based approach, to create clear, practical test plans. 

  • Run key test phases - including systems integration testing, operational acceptance, regression and performance testing – ensuring safe and dependable releases. 

  • Drive adoption of modern practices (DevOps, CI/CD, cloud testing and automation) and coach and mentor testers.  

Main duties of the job

Main duties: 

  • Introducing a formal testing approach for our national SQL database and demographics platforms. 

  • Lead a small team of testers, setting objectives, reviewing performance and supporting development. 

  • Plan, run and report on key test phases. 

  • Produce Test Summary Reports and other key documentation. 

  • Promote modern testing practices within the team.

Main responsibilities:  

  • Ensure testing is effective, consistent and aligned with organisational standards. 

  • Work with product teams and suppliers to resolve issues and deliver high-quality releases. 

  • Maintain traceability, documentation and reports, presenting outcomes to senior management and user groups. 

  • Track and resolve defects and risks. 

  • Stay up-to-date with industry standards, NHS processes and emerging testing tools to improve services. 

Person specification

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Master’s degree in an associated professional field (or equivalent qualification / experience).
  • Knowledge gained through practical experience, working at this level, across the range of work procedures and practices
Desirable criteria
  • ISTQB-BCS Certified Tester Foundation Level
  • Knowledge of NHS Wales or the Health sector.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a similar role as a confident and competent Test Engineer or Senior Test Engineer, with a successful track record of writing, debugging and refactoring complex and/or large-scale test code.
  • Proficient in software testing and its associated documentation such as test plans, test result reports and risk reports, as well as a detailed understanding of defect management and taking structured approaches to the resolution of issues (analysis, diagnosis and reporting of complex system errors).
  • Proficient in programmatic testing in the back end of systems, including databases, data flows and messaging queues.
  • Demonstratable experience with the design and creation of automated test frameworks, such as test harnesses/systems to test other systems.
  • Aware of principles, methods, techniques and tools for the effective management of the testing process and the execution of tests throughout the lifecycle of development or integration projects.
  • Familiar with a collection of methods, practises, tools and techniques, underpinned by the Agile Manifesto, that enable teams to deliver high value products and services in small, workable, increments.
Desirable criteria
  • Familiar with concepts such as Servant-Leaders; ceremonies, Stand-Ups, Sprints and Retrospectives; and the deployment of tools and techniques such as Backlogs and A/B Testing.
  • Aware of how DevOps emphasizes people (and culture) and seeks to improve collaboration between development (Dev) and operations (Ops) teams with the aim of shortening the systems development life cycle to provide continuous release of high-quality software.
