Job overview

It is an exciting time to be joining Public Health Wales Microbiology as we have dramatically expanded our workforce and the way Microbiology services are delivered. Public Health Wales Microbiology consists of a network of laboratories currently based at multiple sites across Wales.

An opportunity has arisen to join our Bacteriology Team at University Hospital of Wales Cardiff. You will have the chance to be at the forefront of Microbiology in Wales following significant investment in new technology and staff. We aim to provide a responsive, modern, rapid diagnostic service for the people of Wales using state of the art equipment.

To demonstrate our commitment and dedication of our staff we offer automatic progression to Band 6 on the successful completion of their IBMS Specialist Diploma (Medical Microbiology /Bacteriology) with 100% compliance of statutory and mandatory training and relevant competency documents. 

The successful post holders will be fully supported, with full training given from our training team. You will be encouraged to develop and opportunities will be given to enhance your career.

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited from candidates who are enthusiastic, well-motivated and innovative, with good organisational and practical abilities supported by scientific knowledge. Candidates should possess well developed interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to support individual and team working. Adaptable and flexible approach to work, self-motivated and with good practical skills will be fundamental to your role. You will use your knowledge and skills as a Biomedical Scientist to contribute to a robust and fully operational system within the department. You will assist in building a strong team and support the Senior Biomedical Scientists to enable continual improvements in the department and throughout the Microbiology Network.  An understanding of good laboratory practice and ISO15189 quality management is desirable.

The post holder will support the provision of a 24/7 service in accordance with a published rota.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Registration as a Biomedical Scientist with Health and Care professions council (HCPC).
  • Advanced understanding gained through attaining IBMS Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology/Virology or equivalent qualification.
  • In depth specialised knowledge and understanding of operating procedures and techniques in diagnostic microbiology.
  • Understands and can apply the principles of Quality Assurance systems.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous participation in out of hours service.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates experience in an HCPC approved Microbiology Laboratory and molecular techniques.
  • Understands, can perform and teach all aspects of routine diagnostic Microbiology.

  • Ability to make complex analytical judgements in problem solving. Ability to recognise and deal with problems instigate corrective action.
  • Self- motivated with a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work reliably, effectively and efficiently using own initiative.

  • Maintains a professional demeanour and approach even in stressful or difficult situations.
  • Prepared to work flexibly throughout the laboratory, and across PHW sites, if required. The post holder will support the out of -hours service provided by the laboratory. This includes weekend and extended day working as part of the working week and the out of hours on call service.
