Job overview
The Locum Consultant will join the regional Children’s Heart Unit at the University Hospital of Wales, providing specialist paediatric cardiology services for children and families across South and Mid Wales. This full-time locum post (10 sessions: 9 Direct Clinical Care and 1 Supporting Professional Activity) is a maternity leave cover within the Children & Women’s Services Clinical Board.
The post holder will deliver high-quality inpatient, outpatient and outreach care, including the assessment, diagnosis and management of congenital and acquired heart conditions. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team of consultant cardiologists, specialist nurses and allied health professionals, they will contribute to safe, effective and patient-centred services. The role includes close collaboration with Bristol Children’s Hospital and other tertiary partners.
Responsibilities include outpatient clinics, inpatient reviews, ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings, clinical governance, audit and quality improvement activities. The successful candidate will support teaching, training and supervision of junior medical staff and contribute to the ongoing development of paediatric cardiology services across the region. Participation in the 1:6 on-call rota is required.

Main duties of the job
The Locum Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist will provide specialist paediatric cardiology services across Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and the wider South and Mid Wales region. The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of children with congenital and acquired heart disease, delivering care in outpatient, inpatient and outreach settings.
Key responsibilities include undertaking outpatient clinics, ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings and specialist cardiac investigations, while working closely with consultant colleagues, specialist nurses and tertiary partners, including Bristol Children’s Hospital.
The successful candidate will contribute to the supervision, training and development of junior medical staff and participate fully in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. They will also support clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and research activities to ensure the delivery of safe, effective and evidence-based care.
The post holder will participate in the 1 in 6 consultant on-call rota and provide cover for consultant colleagues during periods of leave. They will be expected to contribute to service development, maintain professional standards through continuing professional development and work collaboratively across regional cardiac networks to improve outcomes for children and young people with heart disease.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Locum Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist will join the regional Children's Heart Unit at the University Hospital of Wales, providing specialist paediatric cardiology services for children and young people across Cardiff and Vale and the wider South and Mid Wales population. The post is a full-time maternity leave replacement and forms part of an established multidisciplinary team delivering tertiary paediatric cardiac care.
The successful candidate will provide consultant-led care for patients with congenital and acquired heart disease, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment and long-term management in both inpatient and outpatient settings. They will undertake general and specialist paediatric cardiology clinics, participate in ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings, and contribute to the delivery of regional outreach services across Wales.
The post holder will work closely with colleagues in paediatric cardiology, paediatric intensive care, neonatology, paediatric surgery and adult congenital heart disease, maintaining strong links with Bristol Children's Hospital and other tertiary cardiac centres. Attendance at joint regional case conferences and multidisciplinary meetings is expected.
The consultant will provide clinical supervision, support and training for junior medical staff, medical students and other healthcare professionals, while contributing to postgraduate education and workforce development. They will participate in clinical audit, quality improvement, governance and research activities, ensuring care is delivered in accordance with national standards and best practice.
The role includes participation in the 1:6 consultant on-call rota, supporting the management of urgent and complex paediatric cardiac cases and providing consultant cover for colleagues during periods of leave. The successful candidate will also contribute to service development, regional network working and the strategic advancement of paediatric cardiology services across Wales.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise. On Specialist Register for Paediatric Cardiology / Specialty Registrar with CCT / CESR(CP) due within 3 months of interview date / On Specialist Register for Paediatrics with evidence of equivalent training and experience to the level of a UK-based consultant paediatric cardiologist
- MRCP / MRCPCH or equivalent
