Job overview

The Graphic Design and Brand Officer will take ownership of the Health Education and Improvement (HEIW) brand, ensuring it is applied consistently, creatively, and accessibly across all communications. Acting as brand custodian, they will lead the ongoing refresh and evolution of the visual identity, develop user-friendly templates and guides for colleagues, and deliver training to support confident, consistent application of the brand.

Working closely with senior communications colleagues, the Graphic Design and Brand Officer will ensure design outputs align with HEIW’s wider messaging and organisational priorities. The postholder will also take a lead role in exploring the creative and considered use of AI in design - researching, testing, and recommending innovative tools and approaches that enhance creativity, efficiency, and accessibility.

 

Main duties of the job

Manage and act as brand guardian for the HEIW brand.

Create accessible, engaging user friendly templates and guides to support non-designers in the day-to-day use of the brand.

Deliver engaging one-to-one / team training sessions and workshops to build confidence in using HEIW’s brand. 

Recommend the most appropriate approach to display, often complex, information.

Lead the exploration of AI and emerging technologies to enhance HEIW’s design work.

Manage quality control of all design work to ensure professional and consistent standards and compliance with legislation.

Plan, organise, and manage multiple complex and time-sensitive design projects simultaneously, ensuring work is coordinated across a variety of contributors, including internal colleagues, external partners, and design agencies.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or equivalent degree / relevant experience.
  • Strong understanding of the role of design in corporate branding, reputation management, and audience engagement.
  • Knowledge of typesetting, print processes, and Acrobat PDF workflow for proofing/print.
  • Knowledge of digital image processing, typography, layout, and current design trends.
  • Understanding of accessibility standards, Welsh Language requirements, and inclusive design principles in the public sector.
  • Awareness of web vs print design requirements, large format printing, and production processes.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies, including AI in design.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven experience as a graphic designer, producing content across multiple platforms (print, digital, social, video, animation).agement, and audience engagement.
  • Demonstrable experience in brand management, ensuring consistent application across an organisation.
  • Experience in creating accessible, user-friendly templates, guides, and training materials for non-designers.
  • Experience of developing and delivering training or workshops to build colleagues’ brand and design confidence, including persuading and influencing staff to adopt effective design approaches to ensure successful communication and engagement with a range of stakeholders.
  • Experience of working in fast-paced environments, managing multiple projects and meeting tight deadlines, with evidence of planning, organising, and reprioritising work effectively to align with organisational priorities. Strong portfolio demonstrating creativity, technical ability, and attention to detail across a range of media.

Skills and Attributes

Essential criteria
  • High level of technical competence in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop); PowerPoint essential.
  • Ability to develop and lead visual concepts through to final artwork.
  • Strong creative flair, able to generate original concepts from limited briefs and present fully developed ideas.
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills: able to plan, prioritise, and manage multiple competing deadlines, responding flexibly to last-minute requests and urgent organisational priorities. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, able to collaborate effectively with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to interpret complex briefs and translate them into engaging, accessible visual solutions, exercising judgement to recommend the most suitable approach.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to work autonomously and take initiative.
  • High attention to detail with a meticulous approach to quality control and design governance.
  • Ability to incorporate feedback constructively to refine outputs.
  • Respectful, inclusive, and adaptable, with a positive and solutions-focused approach to work.
  • Ability to research, test, and recommend creative and considered use of AI in design workflows.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of 3D, animation, video editing (After Effects/Premiere Pro desirable).
  • Knowledge of collaborative platforms and automation tools.
  • Experience of brand refresh or rebrand processes.
  • Experience of coaching or mentoring in a professional setting.
  • Welsh Language skills levels 1–5 (understanding, speaking, reading, writing).
