Job overview
A permanent opportunity has arisen within Velindre University NHS Trust (VUNHST) Digital Services to lead the Digital Applications Support Team, managing and developing critical digital systems supporting patient care across Velindre Cancer Service.
As Digital Applications Lead, you’ll bring a flexible, innovative approach and strong interpersonal, communication and organisational skills to deliver high-quality system configuration, change management and support across the Trust.
You’ll support and develop key clinical applications including:
- Welsh Clinical Portal (WCP)
- Welsh Patient Administration System (WPAS)
- Welsh Nursing Care Record (WNCR)
- ChemoCare
- Document Management System (DMS)
- Attend Anywhere (AA)
- Plus, contribute to the rollout of Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (EPMA).
Key responsibilities:
- Provide technical leadership in design, configuration and implementation of changes.
- Advise colleagues on application functionality and best practice.
- Ensure availability and performance of business-critical systems.
- Supervise a team delivering 2nd/3rd line support and development, including on-call rota duties.
- Resolve complex IT issues in collaboration with suppliers, Digital Services and clinical teams.
- Manage digital risks, upgrades and releases in line with Trust governance.
This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled digital professional to lead technical support and drive digital transformation at Velindre Cancer Service.
Main duties of the job
- Act as the lead specialist on all matters relating to the designated systems in terms of functionality and good practice, providing specialist advice, support and training to various staff groups across the organisation.
- Ensure a consistent and high-quality IT technical service is provided to all users.
- To elicit, define and document stakeholder requirements
- To manage stakeholder engagement.
- To identify benefits and solution options for consideration.
- To identify business change requirements to support implementation of proposed solutions.
- To be an expert resource and promote best practice within Digital Services.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Qualified to degree level or with equivalent relevant experience.
- Evidence of continued personal and professional development
- Knowledge of working and developing systems within the NHS
Desirable criteria
- Foundation ITIL Certification
- Registered with the British Computer Society
- Excellent working knowledge of working to local Trust policies that relate to Digital.
- Knowledge of the principles of Information Governance, Data Protection and the Freedom of Information
- Knowledge of Quality Management techniques
- Knowledge of Project management principles(e.g. PRINCE2, Agile)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience in the analysis, design, testing, delivery and support of digital information and clinical applications.
- Proven experience of translating business requirements into specialist functional specifications for digital applications
- Experience of developing relationships, communicating and working across organisational boundaries
- Experience of successful team working
- Experience of leading others and offering guidance
- Record of achievement of delivering objectives and finding innovative solutions to problems
- Experience of the complete system life cycle
- Experience of a risk based approach to system development
- Experience of working within a quality driven environment
- Previous NHS experience
- Working in an environment with more or less continuous use of VDU equipment.
- Able to utilise office software packages to an intermediate or higher level. In particular Microsoft Office 365

- Experience of working in a first, second and third line technical support role
- Experience working with NHS Wales clinical and administrative applications
- Working knowledge of GMP and GAMP
- Experience of taking lead role in system design projects
