Job overview

The Upper GI Service at Cardiff and Vale UHB involves complex management of benign upper GI disease, including management of eosinophilic oesophagitis, motility disorders, as well as management of strictures (both benign stricture dilatation as well as malignant stricture stent placement).
Weekly dilatation and oesophageal stent procedures are performed at University Hospital Llandough as well as monthly pneumatic dilatation procedures in University Hospital of Wales.
Additionally, the tertiary JCC funded national radiofrequency ablation (RFA) service for Barrett’s dysplasia is hosted at University Hospital Llandough.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will need to demonstrate professional excellence and the ability to deliver effective care. They will need to agree levels of activity and throughput with the Clinical Lead and undertake annual appraisal and job planning as per UHB Policy. The post holder will be required to adhere to UHB Policy on maintaining Medical excellence and to be committed to maintaining their standard of performance by keeping knowledge and skills up to date. Inpatient ward duties and ward rounds, to include review of and acting upon investigation results. Helping ensure patient admissions run smoothly, efficiently and effectively by encouraging multi-disciplinary team working.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

PROPOSED WEEKLY TIMETABLE OF PROGRAMMED DUTIES (i.e. regular scheduled NHS activities).

The duties described are provisional and will be the subject of annual review and will form a composite part of the JOB PLAN (page 7 on JD) which will be agreed between the post holder and the Chief Executive or a nominated deputy.
The job will entail management of gastroenterology patients at University Hospital Llandough with educational opportunity in Upper GI Disease and support offered for CESR.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or recognised equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with License to Practice
Desirable criteria
  • Academic excellence (prizes, merits, distinctions)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Four years full-time postgraduate training (or part-time equivalent), at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty or equivalent experience/competencies
Desirable criteria
  • Assessment of emergencies

Skills, Knowledge & Ability
