Job overview

Trauma services and paediatric services are based at University Hospital of Wales and in the Children’s Hospital for Wales (CHfW) and consist of trauma clinics and trauma theatre sessions, as well as separate children’s trauma clinics and trauma lists. Under 16’s admitted under non-paediatric surgeons at the weekend are passed to the care of a designated paediatric surgeon the on the Monday after the on-call weekend.

 The UHW is a Major Trauma Centre with a separate MTC Consultant rota and MTC theatre facilities.

Elective orthopaedic services except spines are based primarily at University Hospital Llandough.  Some musculoskeletal clinics are based at Cardiff Royal Infirmary and Barry Hospital.  Elective orthopaedic services at Llandough consist of outpatient clinics and elective theatre sessions. 

 Elective children’s clinics and lists are based in the CHfW. Elective and emergency spine surgery are based at UHW.

 Presently, trauma clinics and some trauma lists are based at UHL due to COVID adaptations, but it is envisaged that trauma activity will move back to UHW.

 12 Consultants populate the general on-call rota, 6 on the MTC rota, and 6 who are not on an on-call rota. The 8 spinal surgeons share a spinal on-call rota. The hand surgeons share a dedicated hand on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

Clinical:

 

 Daily ward rounds and supervision of F2 expected. Theatre & clinic activity is timetabled with consultants in department on a weekly basis. Occasionally the post holder will be rostered to cover theatre or clinic commitments of other medical staff on leave.

 

A timetable will be provided upon recruitment.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Current GMC certificate Training in Radiation Protection or agreement to attend next available course (state higher qualifications if applicable)
Desirable criteria
  • Intercalated Degree
  • MSc or PHD
  • Academic Excellence (Prizes, merits, distinctions etc.,)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Registrar Training programme or equivalent completed FRCS (Tr & Orth) completed
Desirable criteria
  • Interest in knee arthroplasty

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working
  • Effective and demonstrable communication skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
  • Effective IT (computer) skills
  • Self-motivated and flexible approach to work
  • Values aligned to those of the Health Board

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
