Job overview
This Clinical Research Fellowship will be focused on conducting research within early phase oncology trial research and contribute to the overall research performance of Velindre and Cardiff University, carrying out research contributing to improvements in delivery of early phase oncology clinical trials and leading to the publishing of work in high-quality journals. The post is also designed to generate research proposals that can be submitted to gain funding to undertake a higher research degree
This provides a rare opportunity for a trainee oncologist to undertake a dedicated period of research, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to become a future cancer research leader for Velindre Cancer Centre and Wales. They will be supported to take up clinical academic or NHS research consultant posts thereafter.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Research
· To participate in oncology patient management in early phase clinical trials
· To become familiar with early phase trial protocols and working practice within VCC
· To promote unifying working practice in early phase trials between VCC trials unit and CRF at UHW and perform duties at both sites.
· To promote cohesive solid tumour early phase trial activity within South Wales.
· To promote close integration between early phase trials team and site-specific trials groups.
· To independently develop early phase trial research objectives, projects, or proposals for own or joint research including research funding and contribute to the overall research performance of Velindre.
· To support and develop research networks within and out with Velindre and through regular national/international conference/seminar presentations.
· To generate and pursue independent and original early phase trial related clinical trial ideas through participation in the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre /Industry Alliance process.
· To disseminate research findings using appropriate and effective publications, research seminars, meetings, and conferences.
· To prepare research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate.
· To review and synthesise existing research literature within the field.
Other
· To engage effectively with industrial, commercial, and public sector organisations, charities, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally, and nationally to raise awareness of Velindre’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to Velindre and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.

Person specification
Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Qualified Medical Practitioner
- MRCP or equivalent
- Full GMC Registration and License to Practice
Desirable criteria
- MSc, BSc, PhD
- Knowledge of grant applications
- Knowledge of the process through R&D for clinical trials
- SCE – Specialty Certificate Examination in Medical Oncology or equivalent.
- Postgraduate qualification in Oncology
- Proven publication record including a first author publication
Experience
Essential criteria
- Clinical experience at the ST5 level or higher in medical oncology.
- Oncology experience including recruiting and management of patients into clinical trials.
- Completion of NIHR Associate PI scheme
- Experiencing of delivering presentations at a regional, national and international level
- IT skills particularly in the use of MS office applications
- Analytical skills – able to analyse and present complex data, in a range of formats to a variety of audiences.
Desirable criteria
- Oncology experience to STR level
- Experience of working in or managing patients requiring high dependency/ intensive care
- Proven ability to manage own time and deliver a range of tasks to deadlines
- Experience of Phase oncology 1 trials
- Postgraduate certificate in Teaching and Learning for Health Professionals
