Job overview

A vacancy has arisen to join the Clinical Engineering team at Hywel Dda University Health Board.  The Clinical Engineering Department delivers medical equipment management services throughout the University Health Board.

We currently have a vacancy for a Band 5 Clinical Technologist. The successful candidate will become part of a team, specialising in servicing, maintaining and managing a wide range of medical equipment.  This role will be based in Bronglais General Hospital, although the post-holder will be expected to carry out their duties across the University Health Board as necessary.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a member of the Clinical Engineering team and will be required to largely work on their own initiative, carrying out preventive maintenance and inspections.  They will be expected to problem solve with a wide range of complex equipment.

The post holder will have the ability to produce written and verbal reports pertinent to the post e.g. technical documentation.  Excellent team working and communication skills are essential.

The post holder will have an accredited degree relevant to the role and registration with AHCS or RCT within 3 months of appointment OR will have equivalent knowledge and experience at BSc level (with or without a related degree) and progression through AHCS/RCT Practitioner Training Programme equivalence scheme (PTPE) and registration within 24 months of appointment.

Sufficient post registration experience most recently in a speciality dealing with ventilation / CPAP / anaesthetics is desirable. Specific training on a range of medical devices will be provided.

Alternatively, to be eligible for Annex 21, you will need a minimum of a Level 3 (A-levels etc) qualification.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post is advertised as a Band 5 and ideally the post holder will have an accredited degree relevant to the role and registration with AHCS or RCT within 3 months of appointment OR equivalent knowledge and experience at BSc level (with or without a related degree) and progression through AHCS/RCT Practitioner Training Programme equivalence scheme (PTPE) and registration within 24 months of appointment.

However, applicants who do not currently meet the full requirements for the Band 5 role are encouraged to apply and, if successful, will be appointed under Annex 21 rules. To be eligible for a Band 5 Annex 21, they will need a minimum of a Level 3 (A-levels etc) qualification.  Then, through a combination of on-the-job experience and external study, they will need to develop a portfolio to obtain registration either as a Registered Clinical Technologist (RCT) or via the Academy for Healthcare Science Practitioner Training Programme (AHCS PTP). This must be done within a maximum of 4 years.

The Annex 21 rules mean the successful applicant will be supported by a development plan. During the first year, payment will be 60% of the top rate of Band 5 pay, 65% in the second year, 70% in the third year and 75% in the fourth year. Following successfully achieving registration with the RCT or AHCS PTP, the post holder will then be employed at Band 5 at the minimum point on the scale. Support and supervision will be provided in order to develop the successful applicant to the Band 5 role. Failure to achieve the qualification in the designated time frame could result in re-deployment.

As part of the Annex 21 process, there is no financial penalty to those who apply for this role where the percentage will cause a reduction in pay, subsequently a local protection would be put in place until the pay has caught up.

The department provides a broad range of complex, routine and non-routine activities including servicing, repair, calibration, safety testing, quality assurance, evaluation, commissioning, decommissioning, planned preventive maintenance of clinical equipment and devices.

You will be able to find a full job description and person specification attached within the supporting documents.

The Health Board is committed to supporting its staff to fully embrace the need for bilingualism thereby enhancing patient and service user experiences.  In our commitment to increase the number of staff who are able to communicate in Welsh with patients and professionals, we welcome applications from Welsh speakers.

The ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable for this post. If you do not meet the Welsh Language requirements specified, the Health Board offers a variety of learning options and staff support to help you meet these minimal desirable requirements during the course of your employment with us.
