We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, suitably qualified, and experienced HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist for a Specialist BMS role within the Biochemistry section of the Blood Science Department at Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen. 

The vacancy is a permanent, full time (37.5 hours) post with a requirement to participate on the department’s contractual shift pattern supporting Round the Clock Services, and out of hours working on the Biochemistry rota when competent.

The individual should possess either the Specialist Diploma (IBMS Specialist portfolio) or equivalent experience and prior post registration experience to undertake a specialist role within the Biochemistry Section

Main duties of the job

The laboratory provides services in Biochemistry, Haematology, Coagulation, and Blood Transfusion , running fully automated platforms with Biochemistry analysers being the Roche Cobas PRO system with a Specialised Chemistry Section, Haematology analysers are Siemens Advias, Coagulation, Werfen TOPS analysers and Ortho Vision platforms for Blood Transfusion.

The successful candidate will be primarily based in the Biochemistry section at the Glangwili General Hospital site which sits within the Carmarthenshire Division of Hywel Dda University Health Board. The Carmarthenshire division comprises of Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen  and Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli, and the successful candidate may be expected to work across both sites as required.

The successful candidate will be expected to effectively communicate information, advice, instruction and professional opinion to colleagues and Pathology Service users in both primary and secondary care.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post is advertised as a Band 6 and ideally candidates for this role must have achieved the Specialist Diploma - IBMS Specialist portfolio.

However applicants who do not currently hold the qualification for the Band 6 role, are encouraged to apply and, if successful, will need to attain the qualification within 4 years and will be appointed under Annex 21 rules. 

This means they will be supported by a development plan to develop the successful applicant to the Band 6 role. During the first year payment will be 60% of the top rate of Band 6 pay, second year 65%, third year 70% and fourth year 75%. Once the Specialist Diploma has been achieved, the post holder will then be paid at Band 6 (minimum point on the scale).

Failure to achieve the qualification in the designated timeframe could result in re-deployment.

  • Hons. degree in Biomedical Science/Life Science
  • Specialist Diploma or equivalent
  • HCPC Registration
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Knowledge of Pathology Quality Assurance

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Prior experience as a Registered Biomedical Scientist
  • Indepth knowledge of complex laboratory instrumentation
  • Technical ability to troubleshoot, repair, advise or provide in-depth information relevant to specialty

Language Skills
