Job overview

Hywel Dda University Health Board Research and Development delivery support team is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated  Research Assistant to provide administrative support for all research studies across the Health Board. The role will be primarily with the study set-up team. This is a permanent position at 15 hours per week.
 
The successful candidate will play a key role in the administration and data management support for all aspects of the study set-up. The team is based in Withybush hospital (although the base may be considered elsewhere), as well as working alongside a large geographically spread R&D team to support researchers to open studies throughout the health board.
 
The post holder will need a willingness to learn about research study set-up, bespoke computer systems, quality assurance and national and international research regulations which will enable them to assist in the support of the set-up service.  They should be willing to work flexibly to support the service, have excellent communication, organisational and computer literacy skills as well as being able to work well as part of a team.
 
Informal visits to the set-up team in Withybush hospital are welcomed to discuss the role.

Main duties of the job

The Research Assistant will work as part of the research set-up team supporting work all types of research studies.
 
The main purpose of the job is to: - 
 
• Provide administrative and data management support for all aspects of study set-up as an integrated member of the team.
• Assist with the co-ordination of workload and meetings.
• Provide administrative support for the wider R&D support function (set-up, quality assurance, research development)

Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties.

We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services.

We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers.

Our services are provided in:

  • Four main hospitals: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest
  • Five community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire
  • Two integrated care centres: Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings
  • 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers
  • Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services

Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent knowledge in healthcare
  • Knowledge of Medical / Healthcare Terminology
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma or degree in relevant subject or equivalent level of knowlegde
  • Certificate in ICH Good Clinical Practice
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical trials

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of using Microsoft Office packages [Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access and e-mail]
  • Experience of setting up spreadsheets and databases
  • Experience of working in a busy complex environment
  • Previous experience in research/NHS environment
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a clinical trials unit
  • Experience of using Patient Information Systems

  • Ability to travel and work across sites as required
  • Flexible approach to the needs of the service
  • Willingness to attend research specific training
