The salary scale for a Band 3 has been adjusted as part of the NHS Agenda for Change pay award for 2026/2027 and will be implemented in August 2026 backdated to 01 April 2026 where applicable.

Job overview

The post holder will play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care within General Medicine, working as part of a supportive and collaborative multidisciplinary team. Responsibilities include undertaking comprehensive clinical assessments, maintaining accurate and timely clinical documentation, and ensuring the prompt completion of discharge summaries to support effective patient care and flow. 

In addition to clinical duties, the post holder will contribute to the education and development of Resident Medical Staff and undergraduate medical students, while actively participating in audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives. This role offers excellent opportunities to broaden clinical experience, develop specialist interests, and enhance professional skills within a well-established General Medicine service.

Main duties of the job

Working under the supervision of the Consultant Physician and Hospital Director, the post holder will become an integral member of a progressive General Medicine team. The role includes participation in the medical on-call rota and provides strong support for doctors wishing to develop a specialist interest in Cardiology. 

This position is particularly suited to doctors who: 

  • Are preparing to enter a specialty training programme and wish to gain additional clinical experience. 

  • Are working towards MRCP or CESR and would benefit from structured guidance and development opportunities. 

  • Prefer a non-training clinical post while continuing to build expertise and specialist skills. 

 

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Participating in Cardiology ward rounds and the ongoing management of cardiology patients. 

  • Attending Cardiology outpatient clinics to gain exposure to a broad range of cardiovascular conditions. 

  • Developing procedural and diagnostic competencies relevant to Cardiology. 

  • Building and maintaining a portfolio that demonstrates clinical achievements and professional development. 

  • Leading or contributing to clinical audit, quality improvement, and service enhancement projects.

Person specification

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice.
  • • Valid Certified Advanced Life Support.
  • • MBBS or recognised equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • • Additional clinical qualification(s).

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • • Participation in clinical audit (or quality improvement project) and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice.
Desirable criteria
  • • Able to demonstrate involvement in implementing change.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Completion of at least 2 years Postgraduate experience (or part time equivalent).
  • • Able to demonstrate core competencies achieved.
  • • NHS Experience.
Desirable criteria
  • • Able to demonstrate team working.

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • • Willingness to participate in teaching and training.
Desirable criteria
  • • Able to demonstrate previous experience in teaching
