Job overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Locum Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in primary lower limb arthroplasty to join our team on a fixed-term basis until 31 March 2027.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the ongoing elective recovery programme across South West Wales, supporting the delivery of high-volume arthroplasty services through the regional orthopaedic collaboration between Hywel Dda and Swansea Bay University Health Boards. A significant proportion of elective theatre activity will be delivered from Neath Port Talbot Hospital as part of the regional programme, with outpatient, administrative and other clinical activities undertaken across sites within either Health Board as required.
The successful candidate will join a supportive and forward-thinking Trauma & Orthopaedic team committed to delivering high-quality patient care, improving access to treatment and achieving national productivity standards. The role offers the opportunity to focus predominantly on elective primary hip and knee arthroplasty while working alongside experienced multidisciplinary teams across the region.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will provide elective Trauma and Orthopaedic services with a particular focus on primary hip and knee arthroplasty. Responsibilities will include undertaking outpatient clinics, elective operating lists, ward reviews and associated clinical administration, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and patient-centred care.
The post holder will work collaboratively with consultant colleagues, anaesthetic teams, theatre staff, nursing teams and allied health professionals to deliver high-quality orthopaedic services and achieve agreed activity levels. They will contribute to the assessment, treatment and ongoing management of patients requiring joint replacement surgery and support efficient patient pathways from referral through to discharge.
The successful applicant will be expected to participate in clinical governance activities including audit, quality improvement and service development initiatives, while maintaining high standards of clinical practice and patient safety. They will also contribute to the education and supervision of junior medical staff and support the development of multidisciplinary working.
We are seeking a clinician with excellent surgical, communication and organisational skills, a commitment to teamwork and continuous improvement, and the ability to work flexibly within a collaborative regional service model.
