Job overview

As a Specialist Grade Doctor, you will provide expert community psychiatric care to people with intellectual disabilities who reside within the county of Pembrokeshire. The service has already implemented Dementia, Epilepsy, and PMLD pathways. You will lead clinical care, teaching activities and contribute to service development and governance.

This post is ideal for doctors seeking to consolidate their experience or progress within Non-Consultant Career Grades. You’ll be supported through the Portfolio Pathway to gain Specialist Registration and advance your career in a structured, nurturing environment.

We are committed to tackling health inequalities for people with learning disabilities. Our Primary Care Liaison service and General Hospital LD Liaison team work closely with Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire People First to deliver educational sessions to GP trainees and undergraduate medical students. These teams are expanding to increase capacity and align with the wider Directorate’s focus on liaison, early intervention, and prevention.

Main duties of the job

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements: 

  • To ensure the provision and delivery of a first-class clinical service.
  • To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the speciality.
  • To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate.
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Health Board’s procedures and operating policies.
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Health Board’s service plans.
  • To contribute to the Consultant on-call rota (1 in 14 rota).
  • To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty or the Health Board.
  • Core clinical expertise in the field of Intellectual Disability Psychiatry.
  • Experience and knowledge of running a specialty service.
  • Leadership and team building skills as well as working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Supporting and training multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Participating in CPD including Audit.
  • You are expected to maintain your professional development for Revalidation.
  • A Teaching and Training role for medical undergraduates and postgraduates.
  • Supervisor role to Junior and Middle Grade Medical Staff.
  • To undertake regular multi-disciplinary clinical audit and provide evidence based medicine.

· Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.

The post holder will provide specialist community psychiatric care to people with intellectual disabilities who reside within the county of Pembrokeshire, as part of the Pembrokeshire Community Team for Learning Disabilities.

If you are looking to work with a friendly and supportive team, dealing with a wide variety of Mental Health Conditions, in a beautiful rural location with a good work-life balance, then please get in touch. The post holder will be based at Llanion House in Pembroke Dock and will play a key role in delivering high-quality psychiatric care to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Responsibilities include conducting comprehensive assessments, formulating and reviewing treatment plans, and working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. The role also involves contributing to the development and implementation of care pathways, supporting teaching and training initiatives, and participating in clinical governance activities. In addition, the post holder will have the opportunity to actively shape service improvements across the Mental Health and Learning Disabilities (MH&LD) Directorate.

This post is Full Time 40 hours per week (10 sessions with 8 DCC’s and up to 2 SPA’s (one for continued Professional Development and one for Clinical Effectiveness) Job Plan will be agreed with the successful applicant upon commencement. The successful candidate is expected to hold Section 12 approval and be working towards Approved Clinician (AC) status. A minimum of 12 years of postgraduate medical experience is required, including at least 6 years in the field of Psychiatry.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Full registration and a License to Practice with the General Medical Council
  • Valid Certified Advanced Life Support ATLS / ALS / PALS
  • MRCPHYSCH or equivalent Higher Qualification in specialty
  • Section 12 Approval
  • The appointed candidate into this role will be expected to obtain AC Approved Clinician status within 12 months of starting
Desirable criteria
  • Additional clinical qualification(s)
  • AC Approved Clinician Status

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 12 years’ experience since primary medical qualification with a minimum of 6 years within the specialty area.
  • Evidence of leading a team.
  • Able to demonstrate core competencies and clinical skills relevant to the post
  • Evidence of change management, quality improvement or audit
  • Previous experience working in the NHS

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of organising programmes and teaching of all staff groups.
