Job overview
**This position is open to staff working at the Trust in the ‘ECT Family’ this includes current East Cheshire NHS Trust employees, both NHSP and ECT bank staff, ISS staff and volunteers at the Trust. Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications from applicants not listed within these groups.**
Are you compassionate, organised, and committed to making a difference? We are looking for a multifaceted individual to join our team in a dual role as Diabetic Eye Screener and Administration Assistant.
You will deliver high-quality retinal screening services to patients with diabetes and support our administration team to keep day-to-day operations running efficiently. This is a unique opportunity to play a vital part in preventing sight loss and ensuring a smooth, positive experience for patients.
Your time will be split between:
- Alsager Health Centre (estimate twice a week) supporting administration tasks.
- Community screening across East and West Cheshire (estimate twice a week) as per a rota. We pay travel expenses and account for travel time to each of our venues.
Flexibility is essential, as this balance may vary week to week.
We are looking for:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

- Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient care.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.

Main duties of the job
Main duties include:
- Complete a basic visual acuity test and administer eye drops.
- Operate a retinal camera to take retinal images and/or an OCT machine to take an OCT scan.
- Recognise signs of Diabetic Retinopathy to triage images into the correct grading queue.
- Provide clear, reassuring information to patients during appointments.
- Work collaboratively to meet programme targets and quality standards.
- Manage patient appointments and maintain accurate records.
- Support data entry and reporting tasks.
- Contact patients who are overdue screening and encourage attendance.
- Problem solve should any issues arise.
- Support service users with additional needs/communication requirements

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Good general level of education including GCSE English and Maths
- Hold a retinal screening qualification (City and Guilds/Level 3 Diploma)
Desirable criteria
- Accredited Assessor for Level 3 Diploma in Health Screening.
- Optical Coherence Tomography Capture Course
- Customer care or ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) qualification
Knowledge & Skills
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of diabetic retinopathy with ability to identify features requiring escalation.
- High level of knowledge of diabetes and the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the eye.
- Knowledge of Fundus cameras and how they operate/basic troubleshooting skills
- Knowledge of the UK National Screening Committee and NHS England.
- Knowledge of other eye conditions e.g., glaucoma, cataract, and macular degeneration.
- Ability to distinguish between referral and non-referral eye disease.
- Knowledge of the Optomize software and how Optomize is setup in - Ability to use an OCT machine. Application Form/Interview DES/AHP/SEPT25 8 community locations.
- Computer literate. Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Ability to work as part of a team, as well as on own initiative in a busy working environment.
