Job overview

Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT) is seeking to appoint a part-time Consultant in Occupational Medicine.

The Consultant in Occupational Health will have commitment to developing high quality patient care and innovative regarding service models, they need to be dedication to delivery of performance targets and excellence in education and training.  This is a substantive appointment.

This post presents the successful candidate with the opportunity to work supporting several NHS organisations including The Christie NHS Foundation Trust (Manchester) and East Cheshire NHS Trust (Macclesfield).  The post holder will also be expected to contribution to the health and wellbeing of NHS staff and work closely with the Head of Occupational Health, to raise the profile and clinical standards of the service.

The appointee will be expected to work collaboratively with the Virology, Microbiology, and Infectious Diseases teams to support the Occupational Health function in outbreaks, infection control issues amongst staff and in policy development. Collaborative working with Workforce Business Partners and Staff Side Representatives is expected as well as with individual managers.

The post holder will be expected to forge cooperative working relationships with staff in other specialties as required and to assist in the development policy to a local, regional, and national level where appropriate.

The proposed AAC date is 08.01.2026.

 

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be employed by Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT). This is a substantive post with the successful candidate joining a team of 13 occupational health professionals, Including a full-time Advanced Mental Health Practitioner and full-time equivalent MSK Specialist Practitioner. Each of the three NHS organisations has access to rapid access physiotherapy and Employee Assistance Programmes.  

The post holder will provide services to MCHFT (Leighton, Crewe), East Cheshire NHS Trust (Macclesfield) and The Christies NHS Foundation Trust (Manchester) and external contracts where appropriate. The service meets the occupational health needs of approximately 13,000 clients and is predominately nurse-delivered.

The post is offered on a part-time basis on 3 Programmed Activities per week.  There is the scope for agile working or further discussion about the job plan requirements.

The successful applicant must have full registration with the GMC and continue to hold a Licence to Practise. The applicant must also be on the Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training.

Shortlisted candidates will be expected to visit the department prior to interview.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR or European Community Rights
  • Full GMC Registration
  • An appropriate higher Occupational Health qualification e.g., Membership or Fellowship of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine with accredited specialist status
Desirable criteria
  • An appropriate higher Occupational Health qualification e.g., Membership or Fellowship of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine with accredited specialist status

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Comprehensive clinical experience in Occupational Medicine.
  • Evidence of understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good medical Practice set out by the GMC
  • Clinical skills commensurate with the provision of an NHS Occupational Health Physician service
Desirable criteria
  • Previous NHS Experience
  • Experience in undertaking statutory medicals i.e. radiation, lead, drivers etc)

Ability

Essential criteria
  • Recognised ability to work closely with multidisciplinary team.
  • Competent in the use of office-based IT i.e. Word, Outlook, Excel
  • Willingness to engage in and learn IT skills and contribute to the development of IT systems within the department.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of management and administration ability
  • Competence in the use of bespoke occupational health database

Audit and Research

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical audit
  • Evidence to allow accreditation as a Consultant Clinical Supervisor for trainee doctors with the GMC
Desirable criteria
  • Publication of research
  • Evidence of original research, contribution to original research or development of national evidence-based guidance
  • Evidence to allow accreditation as a Consultant Educational Supervisor for trainee doctors with the GMC

Other

Essential criteria
  • Communication: ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen, persuade/ negotiate.
  • Accountability: ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and exert appropriate authority.
  • Interpersonal Skills: ability to see patients as people, ability to empathise and work cooperatively with others.
