An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and compassionate Modern Matron to lead our inpatient services at Bowmere Hospital.

This senior leadership role provides operational and professional oversight across a diverse inpatient unit comprising:

  • A Rehabilitation Ward
  • Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • Two Adult Acute Wards
  • An Organic Ward

As Modern Matron, you will oversee all wards and associated clinical departments, acting as the visible leader and the face of safety and quality across the service. You will provide strong clinical and professional leadership, ensuring high standards of care, patient experience, governance, and performance.

This is a pivotal role requiring a confident, values-driven leader with excellent communication skills, strong governance knowledge, and a passion for delivering outstanding inpatient mental health care.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting and supervising the ECT team
  • Work closely with senior clinical and operational leads across SMH caregroup to help deliver our overall Trust strategy
  • Providing leadership and professional support to Clinical Leads and Advanced Clinical Leads
  • Driving quality improvement, patient safety, and assurance processes
  • Strengthening workforce development, culture, and multidisciplinary collaboration
  • Feeding directly into the Lead Nurse for SMH, ensuring alignment with the Trusts strategic priorities

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RMN/RMNH/RGN
  • Masters Degree or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Management/Leadership qualification

Knowledge & Expertise

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of CPD in areas of quality and practice
  • Understanding of current legislation
  • An understanding of interpersonal relationships, team building and team dynamics
  • Knowledge of current guidance and policies e.g. valuing people
  • An excellent knowledge of user involvement/advocacy in mental health
  • A good knowledge of current practice research and service development in mental health
  • Excellent knowledge of CQC standards including safeguarding

Experience

Essential criteria
  • A minimum of 3 years experience of working in an inpatient setting working with people of severe and ensuring mental health problems. Learning disabilities and CAMHS
  • Evidence of providing and receiving clinical supervision
  • Involvement in education and training of staff
  • Involvement in educating and training of carers
