An exciting opportunity has arisen for motivated Scrub Nurse / Scrub Practitioners to gain a position within the Operating Theatre Department at the Countess of Chester NHS Foundation Trust where we are committed to providing high quality care to our patients. Ideally, we are seeking experienced individuals to join our existing team however consideration will be given to newly qualified and staff with previous NHS experience who express an interest in training in a theatre scrub role.  

Main duties of the job

You will initially be allocated to a surgical speciality team within the theatre department with a view to eventually rotating to other specialities to gain experience and increase your skills, knowledge and versatility. 

The Countess of Chester Theatre Department consists of 2 areas. Main Theatre and Jubilee Day Surgery Theatre. 

Main Theatres has 11 operating theatres + recovery.   The Jubilee Day Case Theatres consists of 4 general anaesthetic theatres, 1 local anaesthetic theatre and 1 minor procedure theatre which is situated in the Outpatient Department.   The surgical specialities covered are General, Urology, Gynaecology, Orthopaedic (elective and trauma), ENT, Plastics, Dental, Ophthalmic and Vascular and a 24 hour emergency  service.

The Countess of Chester is a teaching hospital with links to Chester, Edge Hill, Bolton and Stafford Universities bringing nursing, ODP and Band 4 Scrub trainees into the department.

• The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 473 general and acute beds.
• Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 60 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility.
• Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust employs 5,964 staff (headcount) to provide care and treatment to a population of over 400,000 people living in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire.

The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care System. Due to its location on the border with North Wales, the Trust also works closely with the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

The Trust treats patients from England and some parts of Wales. During 2024/2025, there were approximately 643,000 patient attendances (inpatient, A&E, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work flexibly with shift patterns to include internal rotation depending on the allocated area of practice.
  • Effective communication skills to ensure correct lines of communications are followed.

Knowledge and Experience.

Essential criteria
  • Possess a broad awareness of professional issues
Desirable criteria
  • Significant post registration theatre experience in a surgical speciality rotational capacity.

Qualification

Essential criteria
  • RN or ODP level 3 Qualification.
  • Proven experience in a theatre scrub role or as a newly qualified nurse / practitioner willing to undertake training in a scrub role.
  • NMC or HPCP registered.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of recent professional development
