Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

Band 6

Job overview

We would like to welcome an enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Speech & Language Therapist to our Integrated Community Stroke Team and Acute Stroke Unit.

Band 5 applicants will be considered as a 5-6 developmental post.

This is a great opportunity for an SLT who shares our passion for outstanding quality, holistic patient care and enthusiasm for ongoing improvements. Working within an integrated MDT to design and deliver our services better together, providing goal focused, person and family centred care to our patients. The services combine delivering intensive one to one and group therapy, with a balance of both dysphagia and communication across the caseload.

The post holder will work across inpatient acute and rehab stroke unit, and specialist community stroke services. You will will deliver direct and indirect, 1:1 and group specialist stroke assessment and rehab as part of our integrated stroke services.

We have robust and flexible group and 1:1 clinical supervision arrangements and are very active within our CPD, research and audit locally and nationally. In addition to being dynamically involved in stroke service developments, the post holder will be part of the wider SLT network with active annual collaborative projects for service development across SLT services.

If you have any queries at all, we welcome you to get in touch for an informal discussion about the post.

*Travel is essential requirement of the post*

Main duties of the job

The post holder will cover 3 days in the community stroke team and 2 days on the acute wards.

We deliver communication and eating / drinking and swallowing assessment and therapy according to patient need and in line with their goals. We work closely with our colleagues delivering joint interventions where beneficial. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate experience in assessment and management of a shared communication and dysphagia caseload as an autonomous practitioner.

The acute aspect of the role will be working on the  stroke rehabilitation  and the acute wards thus have experience in managing complex presentations and conditions, and therefore post graduate dysphagia training is desirable. Exciting recent service developments include the introduction of sEMG and MBSImP. The service also runs weekly videofluoroscopy clinics and has recently set up a stroke unit FEES clinic.

As part of the Community Stroke Team, you will provide specialist stroke assessment and rehab as part of our ‘ESD’ and longer-term specialist stroke rehab services for up to approx. 4 months following discharge from hospital. The team consists of Physios, OTs, dietitians, nursing, psychology services, social workers and rehab assistants and works in partnership with the Stroke Association locally to provide a holistic service to the patient.
