Consultant in Critical Care Medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

Applications are invited to join our forward-thinking, friendly department in Critical Care with the option of an associated specialty in either Anaesthesia, Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine or Respiratory Medicine at Mid-Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will be based at Leighton Hospital in the leafy Cheshire countryside near Crewe and Nantwich- a beautiful Cheshire market town.

Within thirty minutes of the hospital are innumerable pretty towns and villages to reside in, plus beautiful walking and cycling routes at your door. There are also a great number of schools in the surrounding area with high Ofsted ratings in both the Independent and State Sectors.

The successful applicant must have full registration with the GMC and continue to hold a Licence to Practise.  The applicant must also be on the Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training.

The post is offered on a full-time basis; however, the Trust would welcome discussion with individuals looking for a more flexible working pattern to support a different work life balance.

Shortlisted candidates will be expected to visit the department prior to interview

The proposed AAC date is 21.01.2026.

Main duties of the job

The post’s emphasis for clinical work will be on Adult Critical Care and either Acute Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Emergency Medicine or Anaesthesia.

This is a fabulous opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic doctor to join the teams to enhance links and share expertise across specialties.

The new consultant will join the existing team of e Consultants providing medical cover for the Critical Care Unit, who work closely together and act as a very supportive group with a determined ethos.

The spacious Critical Care Unit located adjacent to the theatre suite, was opened 8 years ago and has recently been expanded to provide an integrated 18 bedded area with four potential isolation rooms and the ability to cohort into a four-bedded area separate from the main unit.

This exciting opportunity also allows the successful candidate to widen their interest in one of the specified specialty areas, alongside dedicated teams of consultants who are focused on improving outcomes and patient experience.

Working for our organisation

Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT) provides good quality, safe and effective healthcare to the people of Cheshire and beyond. The Trust, which manages Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich, and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford, was established as an NHS Trust in April 1991 and became a Foundation Trust in April 2008.

We employ almost 5,000 members of staff, provide around 540 hospital beds, with a range of services including accident and emergency, maternity, outpatients, therapies, and children's health.

The Trust is also part of Central Cheshire Integrated Care Partnership (CCICP), a unique local health partnership that provides a range of community services for people across South Cheshire and Vale Royal.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, the Trust was recognised nationally for its Be Safe Be EquiPPEd campaign, which aimed to make the Trust as safe as possible for staff and patients, through supporting the correct use of PPE.

The results in the 2020 national NHS Staff Survey showed improvements in all elements of the safety culture theme, with 92% of respondents feeling their role made a difference to our patients. We were also recognised nationally for our workforce health and wellbeing initiatives.

At Mid Cheshire, we value our staff and appreciate that in order to give our patients the best quality, compassionate care, we also need to look after our colleagues.
