Job overview

The General Surgical Department at East Cheshire NHS Trust is a friendly and dynamic unit. The unit has a fully established Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery Service complemented by enhanced recovery after surgery service.

It is a highly progressive General Surgery Department offering broad range of laparoscopic services. We continue to invest in developing laparoscopic services. We regularly perform day case laparoscopic gall bladder & hernia surgery.

Applicants must be on the General Medical Council Specialist Register.

Hours per week: 10 PAs

Main duties of the job

 The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • The appointee will take a share of the Consultant Clinical responsibilities within the department. This will include:
  • Active involvement and leadership in management and decision making of general surgery cases.
  • Being available during the working week so that medical and nursing staff can communicate and consult freely.
  • Close liaison with the Operational Line Managers and the Clinical Lead to ensure that waiting list targets and associated standards are achieved.
  • Ensuring that management plans are clearly displayed in the notes of patients with complex needs.
  • Independent Surgeon

The appointee will be expected to:

Provide strong leadership direction within the General Surgical Team together with senior Nursing colleagues, ensuring a team approach to care through the establishment of explicit lines of communication.

Working for our organisation

NHS Medical and Dental salaries are set at a national level.  For new starters not already working to UK Medical and Dental terms and conditions of service will be appointed to the minimum paypoint.  The starting salary paypoint can only be increased when there is evidence of relevant, completed year’s experience in terms of nature, type and level of role.  The evidence required to increase a starting salary would be Payslips and details noted in the application form i.e. complete employment history

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • An appropriate higher surgical qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant higher degree

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in General Surgery
  • Broad range of recent experience and expertise in general & laparoscopic surgery
  • Experience of Laparoscopic Day Surgery
  • Ability to deal with a broad range of emergency admissions
  • Able to perform upper & lower GI endoscopy with a caecal intubation rate of greater than 90%)
Desirable criteria
  • JAG accreditation

Clinical Effectiveness

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate understanding of principles of governance and audit
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of having undertaken audit
