Job overview

**This position is open to staff working at the Trust in the ‘ECT Family’ this includes current East Cheshire NHS Trust employees, both NHSP and ECT bank staff, ISS staff and volunteers at the Trust. Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications from applicants not listed within these groups.**

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Research Team at East Cheshire NHS Trust as a Band 6 Research Midwife. This is a secondment / fixed term post until 31st March 2026 to support with increased maternity research activity.

The role requires adherence to Good Clinical Practice and research governance.

Previous research experience not required as research study specific training will be given.

Hours per week: 7.5

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a Research Midwife to support with the delivery of research studies within maternity services.

The post holder will be involved in ensuring that all research undertaken within the department safeguards the wellbeing of patients and is conducted according to Good Clinical Practice (GCP), using knowledge of trial protocols and their application in practice alongside a working knowledge and compliance with local, national and international research regulations.  

This is an excellent opportunity to enable the individual to gain a wide range of skills and experience within the research environment. You will support with the recruitment and randomisation of patients into studies, ensuring the patient pathway in the trials is completed, completing electronic and paper CRFs. Duties will also include providing support to patients who have been, or have the potential to be, recruited into the trials.

Qualifiactions

Essential criteria
  • NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) Registered Midwife
  • Evidence of continuous professional development and additional specialist training
Desirable criteria
  • Good Clinical Practice certificate
  • Mentorship training
  • Advanced communication qualifications
  • Evidence of Consent training
  • Degree in healthcare subject or research related subject

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of ICH- Good Clinical Practice regulations relating to clinical research
  • Understanding of research delivery
  • Specialist midwifery knowledge transferable to research
  • Ability to apply good analytical skills to problems and able to identify and implement effective and appropriate solutions
  • Working knowledge of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
  • Motivated and able to motivate others
  • Ability to apply evidence-based knowledge into practice
Desirable criteria
  • A good understanding of current issues relating to the NHS
  • Knowledge of Research Governance, GDPR & the principals of Good Clinical Practice
  • Ability to deal with difficult/sensitive situations
  • Awareness of ECT and/or Christie Hospital policies
  • Awareness of the role of the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) and RRDN (Regional Research Delivery Networks)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical experience post qualification across antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care.
  • Proven experience of working under pressure and to deadlines
  • Proven experience of dealing with a busy workload
  • Experiencing at organising and prioritise own workload
Desirable criteria
  • Recent clinical research experience
  • Experience of recruiting and care of patients in Cancer Research trials and/or Oncology Nursing
  • Ability to manage people and change
  • Data management experience
  • Evidence of mentoring /coaching

Communication

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to explain complex concepts to patients in a clear and simple manner
  • Awareness and respect for confidentially
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • Remain professional at all times
