Job overview

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Respiratory Physiologist to join our Cardio‑Respiratory Department, working across both Warrington and Halton Hospital sites. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a growing, patient‑focused service that delivers high‑quality diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care.

We also welcome applications from individuals interested in joining us as an Apprentice Respiratory Physiologist, undertaking the Physiologist Training Programme (PTP) at the University of Wolverhampton. If this role is undertaken as an apprenticeship, please note that the salary will fall under Annex 21 of Band 5 while studying, in accordance with NHS Terms and Conditions.

Main duties of the job

·         Perform and report a range of lung function tests

·         Carry out CPAP mask fitting and provide patient education

·         Analyse and interpret overnight oximetry studies

·  Issue, download, and process NOX sleep studies, ensuring accurate data handling and reporting

·         Assist in the delivery of CPAP clinics

·         Support the training and supervision of junior staff

·         Work flexibly across both Warrington and Halton sites as require

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work towards independence as a competent practitioner, delivering high-quality diagnostic and technical services within the Cardio-Respiratory Department. The post holder will provide respiratory investigations and support across both Warrington and Halton Hospital sites, as well as within community venues when required. The role also includes active participation in the training, supervision, and development of Trainee Clinical Physiologists and Assistant Technical Officer (ATO) staff.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Practical experience in healthcare,
  • Understanding of a range of basic respiratory investigations
  • Experience working directly with patients in a clinical environment
Desirable criteria
  • Experience within a Cardio‑Respiratory or hospital‑based diagnostic service
  • Experience supporting or guiding junior staff or student

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good pass in GCSE English and Maths
  • ARTP Spirometry Certificate or willingness to work towards
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate
Desirable criteria
  • ARTP Part 1 / 2 or Practitioner Cert
  • ILS
  • AHCS Registration or eligibility
  • ARTP Spirometry Certificate

Skills, knowledge and competencies

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of Caldicott Principles and patient confidentiality
  • Knowledge of manual handling guidelines
  • Awareness of Health & Safety requirements
  • Good IT skills and confidence using clinical software
Desirable criteria
  • Competent in recording and interpreting spirometry and/or full pulmonary function tests
  • Ability to analyse polygraphy and overnight oximetry studies
  • Experience supporting CPAP clinics using auto‑titrating and fixed‑pressure devices
