Children's Continence Sister

Job overview
· To be a specialist practitioner providing assessment, treatment and evaluation for children and young people with continence needs.
· To develop and implement education and training programmes which support the role of relevant community staff working with children e.g., school nurses, health visitors, community children’s nurses, General Practitioners
· To act as a specialist resource for the promotion of continence and management of incontinence within the defined paediatric age group.
· The post holder has a personal responsibility and duty of care to patients/service users; they are expected to comply fully with all Trust policies and protocols, including those related to patient safety and the prevention of healthcare associated infections. They must also promote dignity, privacy, and respect, to deliver compassionate, safe, high quality patient care

Main duties of the job
Provide specialist continence advice and support for all staff involved in the care of children and young people with continence needs, focusing on the need to promote continence where it may be achieved.
Act as a role model for excellence in children’s continence care
Provide specialist assessment, support and treatment for children who have continence needs including children with constipation and soiling, day and night-time wetting, problems with toilet training, assessment of ability to toilet train and provision of containment products to children assessed as unable to be toilet trained
Provide professional advice, support and leadership to junior members of the team.

Essential criteria
- RSCN or RN (Child) with current NMC registration
Experience
Essential criteria
- Recent experience of working within an acute or community health setting
- Evidence of safeguarding experience
- Experience of utilising evidence based practice
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working with children in the promotion of continence and management of incontinence desirable
- Experience of working with children with behavioural or learning difficulties desirable
Knowledge & Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to work within the boundaries of the NMC professional Code of Conduct. An understanding of government and Trust documents/policies in relation to Children’s Nursing. A team player able to work well with others and demonstrate commitment to team objectives. Ability to use initiative to decide within sphere of work and/or knowledge recognising where assistance is required.
- Understanding of child development.
- Understanding of safeguarding procedures and can raise and action child protection concerns
