Job overview

The post holder will deliver expert clinical care in cardiac and thoracic surgery, supporting consultants and registrars during procedures and managing patient care across outpatient clinics, preadmission assessments, ward rounds, and discharge planning. Operating at an advanced level, they will lead the cardiothoracic specialty service, manage a patient caseload from diagnosis to discharge or end-of-life, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies to ensure high-quality care. A Master’s in Surgical Care Practice is required.

Main duties of the job

The Advanced Cardiovascular SCP provides autonomous, expert care for cardiac surgery patients, leading clinics, initiating assessments and treatment plans, assisting in theatre, and managing daily inpatient care. The role includes leadership in clinical decision-making, urgent care management, MDT participation, and service development to ensure high-quality, patient-centred care.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Excellent understanding of advanced practice
  • • Excellent knowledge of cardiothoracic anatomy and surgical operations and procedures
  • • Excellent clinical skills
  • • Complex problem solving and assessment skills
  • • Knowledge of the complex strategic issues which influence the area of practice at a local and national level
  • • Advanced knowledge of audit/research and evidence of application
  • • Advanced interpersonal and communication skills
  • • Proven negotiation skills

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • NMC level 1 registration
  • • MSc in Surgical Care Practice
  • • Basic Surgical Skills Course – accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons
  • • Teaching certificate relevant to Mentoring in Nursing
  • • Clinic Skills Level 3
  • • Non-Medical Prescribing Qualification – master’s degree module
  • • CALS Provider Certificate
Desirable criteria
  • • Royal College of Surgeons SCP Exit Exam

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Significant experience of working within cardiothoracic surgery
  • • Post registration experience working at a higher level within a speciality area
  • • Change management experience
