Job overview

The Medical Psychology service provides psychological assessment, support and treatment to medical patients. Within this, the adult neuropsychology team provide specialist neuropsychology input to the neurosciences service, including neurosurgery, neurology, neurophysiology, stroke and neurorehabilitation.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 Assistant Psychologist to join the team on a fixed term basis, working in neuropsychology.

The role involves working with clinicians to support the delivery of psychological assessment and intervention for people with neurological conditions. This may include: assisting with the delivery of the neuropsychology services (including clinical assessment, formulation and treatment) under supervision, taking into account the full range of needs including cognitive, psychological, social and medical factors.  This will involve working with adult patients during their hospital stay and through outpatient clinics.  

The post holder will have excellent communication skills and will have demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team. Above all you must be passionate about working with those living with neurological conditions and delivery a person centred service.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide, under supervision, a specialist medical psychology / neuropsychology service, ensuring effective, caring and compassionate services to patients. 
  • To undertake psychological / neuropsychological screening and triage of medical patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.  

  • To undertake, under supervision, psychological / neuropsychological assessments 

  • To deliver, under supervision, psychological interventions in line with agreed protocols for medical patients 

  • To work independently according to a plan agreed with a qualified psychologist and within the overall framework of the team’s policies and procedures

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • An upper second class honours degree or higher in psychology (as recognised by the British Psychological Society)
  • Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society
Desirable criteria
  • Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, medical psychology/neuropsychology and/or research design and analysis.
  • Attendance at the leadership and development and improvement programme (4.5 days)

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • High level communication skills (written and oral) including an ability to communicate highly complex/sensitive information and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive, and where there may be barriers to acceptance.
  • An ability to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines.
  • An ability to interact with people with neurological problems and/or other disabilities, and their carers.
  • An ability to work independently and on own initiative, reliably and consistently with work agreed and managed at regular intervals.
  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with medical conditions, psychological issues, neurological problems or other disabilities.
  • An ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to a health care context
  • Ability to contribute to formal research programmes
Desirable criteria
  • An interest in working with people with neurological problems and/or other disabilities.
  • High Standard of report writing

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Work with people with health problems, psychological difficulties and/or other disabilities
  • Experience using computers for databases or data-analysis, including Excel and SPSS for Windows.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of paid work in direct care provision.

Essential criteria
  • Ability to accept and use clinical supervision appropriately and effectively.
  • A desire to explore a career in professional psychology
