Job overview
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Ophthalmologist at Wrexham Maelor Hospital from individuals who share our passion for improving the quality of ophthalmology services. You will join a team of existing consultants who have special interests which include Glaucoma, Paediatric ophthalmology, Medical and Surgical Retina.
We are looking for an enthusiastic Consultant to work in our dynamic team. We would welcome applications from individuals with experience in general ophthalmology with a sub specialist interest in paediatrics or occuloplastics to support the delivery of the demands of the service.
Candidates for the role must have Full GMC registration with a Licence to Practice. You will be expected to possess FRCOphth or equivalent.
The post-holder will be experienced and able to undertake both Theatre and Clinics. The successful candidate will take part in teaching and supervision of junior doctors and other health professionals associated with the service. You will participate in a 1:5 on call until 10 pm. All clinicians will be expected and encouraged to participate in clinical governance initiatives, clinical effectiveness and audit and risk management.
Main duties of the job
You will provide a clinical service, with colleagues, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
Working with consultant colleagues and the multi-professional team you will have continuing responsibility for the well-being of all patients under your care; allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff.
In partnership with clinical and managerial colleagues you will also have responsibility for the safe, efficient and effective functioning of the services in which you work in line with the values, of the Health Board.
You are encouraged to consider how services can be improved and to report any concerns about safety.

QUALIFICATION
Essential criteria
- GMC registration with a licence to practice as a Consultant (FRC Ophth) Medical Degree
- FRCS or equivalent
- CCT and or CESR Evidence of qualification/training or competencies in retinal ophthalmology.
- CCT or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
EXPERIENCES
Essential criteria
- Broad Based general experience in Ophthalmology plus specialist skills and interest in Cataract surgery
Desirable criteria
- Additional specialist qualification or qualification, relevant skills experience in the relevant specialty
CLINICAL GOVERNANCE
Essential criteria
- An understanding of the Strategic and Operational issues underpinning Clinical Governance and their application in daily practice and evidence of such.
ABILITY
Essential criteria
- Ability to apply knowledge. Ability to write relevant, legible clinical notes.
- Safe and effective verbal communication skills.
- Willingness to involve patients in their management.
- Ability to handle difficult interviews with patients or relatives with tact and sensitivity
- Basic IT skills
Desirable criteria
- Advanced IT Skills.
MANAGEMENT
Essential criteria
- An understanding of NHS management practices and their application and evidence of such. A willingness to attend and actively participate in the departmental management meetings.
Desirable criteria
- Management courses / qualifications.
- Departmental administration experience.
AUDIT
Essential criteria
- Evidence of participation Evidence of completed audit projects.
Desirable criteria
- Critical appraisal courses / skills.
