The Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology is a large, highly developed & innovative department. It has seen massive investment over the last ten years with a large expansion of all aspects of the service.
The hepatology service is delivered by 2 consultants, 1 Consultant Nurse as well as specialist nurses. A unique community based Hepatitis C program in conjunction with the hospital based service was highly commended in the National Quality & Care awards in 2014.
Inpatient hepatology is delivered by luminal gastroenterologists & hepatologists but advise on management of complex inpatient hepatology is readily available. An Alcohol Liaison Team was commissioned in April 2015 to aid with the delivery of brief interventions to prevent alcohol related admissions & are available on the wards 7 days a week.
The hospital boasts a 7 day roaming paracentesis service given by the interventional radiology nurses. We have a keen interest in the development of end of life pathways & are also proud have achieved IQILS accreditation level 2.
Main duties of the job
Over the last few years £3.4m has been spent on fully refurbishing and expanding the endoscopy unit. The department boasts 6 rooms on the Royal Cornwall site and one room at the West Cornwall site. In addition, a new mobile trans-nasal endoscopy service has been approved and will be operational in the next few months. The department has won awards for innovations in green endoscopy including being the first in the UK to utilise Entonox scrubbing equipment. The endoscopy workforce has also been dramatically expanded and includes new consultant and non-consultant endoscopists.
Bowel cancer screening has been well established since 2009. We are currently fully age extended from 56-75 and will shortly be extending invitations to 54 year olds.
We have always performed well at QA visits and meet key KPIs. We currently have seven accredited screening colonoscopists performing lists across two sites and a fully staffed admin and SSP nursing team. We are active in national research studies including SEAFOOD and COLO-PREVENT.
