Job overview
We are looking for a dynamic, innovative Advance Care Practitioner (ACP)to join the Emergency Department team at Furness General Hospital.
The post holder will independently manage patients, request and interpret investigations, formulate treatment plans, prescribe where appropriate, and make decisions regarding admission, referral, or discharge. The role contributes significantly to reducing waiting times, improving patient experience, and supporting delivery of national urgent and emergency care standards. ACPs also provide clinical leadership, education, and support to colleagues, contributing to service improvement and workforce development.
Main duties of the job
Act as an autonomous practitioner, providing advanced clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) and Minor Treatment Unit (MTU) with a wide range of minor injuries and illnesses.
Independently assess patients, formulate differential diagnoses, request and interpret investigations, and develop appropriate treatment and management plans.
Prescribe medications and treatments within the scope of professional registration and prescribing qualifications, ensuring safe and effective patient care.
Support the effective operation of the Minor Treatment Unit by managing patient flow, reducing waiting times, and helping to alleviate pressure and congestion within the main Emergency Department.
Participate in clinical audit, service evaluation, quality improvement initiatives, and the implementation of evidence-based practice.
Provide leadership, supervision, teaching, and mentorship to junior staff, students, and other healthcare professionals.
Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical records and ensure compliance with Trust policies, professional standards, and governance requirements.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
Our Community Service for adults are provided in people's homes ,community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent , improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care , advice and support.
