Junior Clinical Education Fellow
2 Posts for 12 months starting September 2026
Post holders will work in an acute or general medicine environment, managing a variety of medical presentations. During the education component of the role, post holders will work closely with the Undergraduate Administrative and Clinical Skills teams.

Main duties of the job
Post would be ideal for a motivated junior doctor who is interested in developing both their acute medical skills and teaching portfolio. Post holders will divide their time between clinical work and teaching on a 6 monthly basis.
Post holders will work closely with the Undergraduate Medical Education team to facilitate the teaching and development of undergraduate medical learners, which can include medical students, student physician associates and students on elective placements.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
JOB ROLE
We are looking to appoint 2 Junior Clinical Education Fellows to work in the MECCS Division at Furness General Hospital and to deliver high quality undergraduate medical education to students from Lancaster University and University of Central Lancashire. The post-holder will have, as a minimum, completed the UK Foundation Programme Training; the post would be ideal for a motivated junior doctor who is interested in developing both their acute medical skills and teaching portfolio. It is envisaged that the post-holders will divide their time between clinical work and teaching on a 6- monthly basis, an example is included below:

The doctor will have the opportunity to work closely with senior colleagues and thereby gain experience and confidence within the specialty they are working.
The doctor is ward based in an acute setting during their clinical component, working Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day.
Duties of the post include:
Taking responsibility for the continuity of care of inpatients.

Supervision of inpatients and organising appropriate investigations in accordance with senior doctor instructions.

Agreeing diagnosis and completing discharge summaries

To prescribe safely.

Ensure appropriate information is made available to staff to measure clinical performance and enable meaningful benchmarks to be established and evaluated within your area of responsibility.

Provide a role model of professional leadership, which underpins the corporate values and behaviours agreed by the organisation, ensuring these are understood and demonstrated by the medical workforce within your area and take remedial action where poor behaviour is demonstrated.
TEACHING
The post-holder will work closely with the Undergraduate Medical Education team to facilitate the teaching and development of undergraduate medical learners, which can include medical students, student physician associates and students on elective placements.
Bedside teaching is encouraged to offer a safe and supervised environment for students to learn about the inpatient journey as practicably as possible.
Classroom-based sessions are also an important component of these roles; these will include introductions to Medicine, case-based discussions and problem-based learning sessions to help students to consolidate the knowledge gained in clinical areas.
The post holder will also be expected to assist in the development of simulation-based education and the use of digital learning.
The post holder will be encouraged and supported by seniors to develop their own teaching methods and style.
Feedback will be sought from the learners on a regular basis and the post-holder will be expected and required to reflect on this feedback and implement any changes that are considered necessary as a result.
Clinical Education Fellows are offered the opportunity to do a funded Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education at the University of Central Lancashire.
POST GRADUATE TRAINING
This post is NOT recognised for postgraduate training, however, the experience that the post-holder gains will be an attractive asset to furnish their CV with when considering applying to formal training programmes in the future.
Furness General has an excellent and forward-thinking Undergraduate Medical Education Department which is keen to develop further, facing the challenges in the current climate of delivering high quality medical education.
The post-holder will be expected to ensure they stay at the forefront of changes in legislation, innovations in staff engagement and will take responsibility for their own educational development and review their development needs in the context of their professional requirements.
Medical learners from Lancaster Medical School and UCLAN Medical School receive training in Cumbria and North Lancashire.
Key Relationships
The post holder will be:
Directly accountable to their Clinical/Educational Supervisor and the Undergraduate Medical Education team.
Expected to work collaboratively with all medical colleagues and others to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care and safety.
Expected to develop and maintain a productive relationship with learners.
Expected to co-operate and engage in any governance issues that may arise.
