Job overview

Paediatric Staff Nurse, Band 5, Cumberland Infirmary, 36 hours per week.

Based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, we are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic  Band 5 Registered Nurse (Child) to work on the Children’s Ward, 36 hours on a permanent contract. Children's Ward is a 24 bed general paediatric unit that also covers surgical specialities such as ENT and Orthopaedics. You will assess, plan, deliver and evaluate high standards of nursing care to children, young people and their families. You will also contribute as requested by the Ward Manager to the operational and strategic management of the unit, actively participating in the development and implementation of quality initiatives. The Trust will provide a twelve month preceptorship period for all newly registered healthcare professionals.

Main duties of the job

You will assess, plan, deliver and evaluate high standards of nursing care to children, young people and their families. You will also contribute as requested by the Ward Manager to the operational and strategic management of the unit, actively participating in the development and implementation of quality initiatives.

The unit promotes a philosophy of family centred care and provides a 24 hour comprehensive nursing care service to the paediatric population of North Cumbria, with high regard for the child and families individual needs and with acknowledgement and implementation of the Department of Health Recommendations.

The Trust will provide a twelve month preceptorship period for New to registration Nurses Midwives and Allied Health Professionals.

Registered Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals returning to practice, moving into new roles or changing clinical environments, may access an agreed preceptorship period.

The cost of the DBS must be met by the successful candidate(s) through salary deduction. DBS charges are as follows if applicable to the post:

Standard Check: £21.50 + Administration cost of £5.90 = £27.40. Deducted from salary over a 4 month period or a one-off payment.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Children's Nurse - active NCM registration
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development (CPD)
  • Safeguarding Children Level 3 (or willingness to achieve on next available course)
  • PILS (Paediatric Immediate Life Support) or willingness to undertake
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching, mentoring or assessing qualification (e.g. ENB 998, practice assessor/supervisor)

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of child development, family centred care and safeguarding children procedures
  • Awareness of national and local policies affecting paediatric nursing practice
  • Ability to recognise signs of clinical deterioration in children and act appropriately
  • Awareness of infection prevention and control principles
  • IV Therapy training and competency (or willingness to complete on appointment)
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience working on a paediatric ward or in an acute hospital setting (e.g. during training and employment)
  • Experience with elective surgical patients or shared care oncology
  • Experience in using central venous access devices (CVADs)

Skills and Aptitudes

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for children and young people
  • Ability to prioritise workload, use initiative and manage time effectively
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and upholding professional standards
