Job overview
The Radiology Department at Royal Lancaster Infirmary is looking for an enthusiastic Imaging Support Worker to join our friendly and supportive team.
This is an exciting opportunity to work within a busy diagnostic imaging service, supporting patients and staff across a range of specialist areas including CT, MRI, Ultrasound and the Radiology Day Care Unit.
Applicants should be well organised, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be confident using IT systems. Previous experience within a healthcare environment is desirable, together with a Level 3 NVQ in Health and Social Care (or equivalent experience).

Main duties of the job
The role involves supporting Radiologists, Radiographers and Radiology Nurses in the delivery of safe and effective patient care across a range of imaging services.
Duties include:
- Supporting patients before, during and after examinations and procedures.
- Assisting with ultrasound, CT, MRI and interventional radiology activities.
- Supporting sterile procedures.
- Undertaking venepuncture and cannulation following appropriate training and competency assessment.
- Chaperoning patients where required.
- Assisting with the smooth day-to-day running of imaging services.
- Undertaking administrative duties including appointment management on the Radiology Information System (RIS) and liaison with wards and clinical teams.
The post is 22.5 hours per week and requires flexible working Monday to Friday on a rotating shift pattern including:
- 07:30 – 15:30
- 08:30 – 17:00
- 12:00 – 20:00
Working days will vary according to the rota and will be provided with a minimum of six weeks' notice. Participation in Bank Holiday working is required and is shared equitably across the team.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Good General Education including English and Maths GSCE at Grade C/4 or above or Functional Skills Level 2.
- Good Command of English Language
- NVQ Level 3 Diagnostic and Therapeutic Radiography support or equivalent experience
- • Evidence of willingness to undertake further training and development relevant to the role.
Desirable criteria
- Trained in cannulation
- Trained in venepuncture
- Care Certificate completed
- Additional healthcare support worker training relevant to diagnostic services.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working within a healthcare, care or patient-facing environment.
- Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience of providing direct support to patients.
- Experience of working with members of the public.
Desirable criteria
- Experience working within a Radiology, Imaging or Outpatient setting.
- Experience supporting invasive or sterile procedures.
