An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Rheumatology team
within the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation
Trust. We are seeking a clinician with imagination, drive and
commitment to work in Morecambe Bay. You will be required to have appropriate experience in rheumatology and hold or be within 6 months of obtaining certification from the General Medical Council (CCT).

You will be expected to:

Provide specialist out-patient opinion and case management;

To contribute in the ongoing development of rheumatology services
for the local population across the Bay.

The role also involves participation in training and educational
activities , administrative, teaching, continuing medical education
and audit activities whilst maintaining clinical excellence within the
service.

We would be interested to hear from candidates that may also wish to undertake a dual specialty role.

Expected interview date is likely to be mid/late-March 2026.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking 2 consultant clinicians with imagination, drive and commitment to work across Morecambe Bay.

These are full time position(s), but applications would be welcome from those wishing to work less than full time.

Principal activities will include:

  • Delivery of Outpatient clinics
  • Making early diagnosis and treatment decisions for patients
  • Requesting appropriate diagnostics
  • Reviewing diagnostic results
  • Maintaining comprehensive records utilising the Trust's ePR
  • Attendance and input at MDTs
  • Undertaking clinical audits
  • Supervision of junior medical staff
  • Other associated medical reviews and input in line with GMC requirements, Trust expectations and individual tailored competencies.

Job Plans will be agreed with successful individuals ahead of the commencement of employment.

 

 

Working for our organisation

Situated on the edge of the picturesque Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks, UHMBT operates sites at Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as from a number of community-based premises across Morecambe Bay.

The FGH and RLI sites are Acute General Hospital sites with Type 1 Emergency Departments, whilst WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, alongside an Urgent Treatment Centre. All three hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. 

As a diverse organisation, we offer excellent support for staff from all backgrounds, with various support groups led by staff to help successful candidates settle in the area.

This is a geographically attractive area within easy reach of all major cities via the national rail network, with cities such as Carlisle, Liverpool, Manchester and Preston within 1-2 hour's travel time. Candidates interested in an outdoor lifestyle will enjoy access to the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks alongside the seafront and activities of Morecambe Bay.

Local schools are noted as providing excellent education via the Royal Lancaster Boy's Grammar School and the Lancaster Girls Grammar School alongside a good selection of mixed-sex and private education establishments in easy access.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS and MRCP, or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • Entry on Specialist Register or in receipt of CCT within six months of interview

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Depth and breadth of Rheumatology Medicine following completion of approved STR training programme or equivalent.
  • Experience in a special interest that will complement those existing in the department.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience at locum consultant level.
  • Previous NHS experience

Skills, ability and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Willingness and ability to fulfil the key elements of the job description.

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of teaching appropriate to Medical students and Doctors in training and the multidisciplinary team.

Audit

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of multidisciplinary clinical audit principles and evidence of direct involvement in 2 specific audits in the last 18 months.

Management Ability

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of the NHS plan/modernisation agenda and the implications for service development
