Would you like to develop a career working with patients in the exciting and constantly developing field of nuclear medicine? Would you like to be paid (as an apprentice) whilst earning a degree?  Would you like your University fees to be paid by your employer?
Nuclear Medicine Practitioners work in multidisciplinary teams to diagnose and treat disease using radionuclides and radiation in its various forms. These apprenticeships are ideal for people who have a keen interest in science, a desire to work in patient –facing healthcare,  work well as part of a team, and have the ability to manage practical training alongside academic study.

During the apprenticeship you will complete an integrated 3 year B.Sc Degree. in Healthcare Science (nuclear medicine) at the University of the West of England, Bristol (three, one week residential periods each year, plus online learning).

Suitable candidates must meet the entry requirements for the BSc Healthcare Degree programme.  As a minimum this is GCSE Grade C or above in English Language, Mathematics and Double Science, plus A-level Grade C or above in Chemistry or Biology, and a pass in another science subject.  Equivalent qualifications or professional experience may also be accepted.  You must be available to start the University course in September 2026. 

Main duties of the job

Patient Care
- Learn to provide a range of highly specialist clinical technical services for patients or medical equipment support services.
- To ensure Trust standards and guidelines on infection control are followed.

Technical
- Be alert at all times to any malfunctioning of the full range of complex equipment, identifying malfunctions accurately.
- Learn to carry out service, repair and calibration in accordance with appropriate protocol.

Clinical
- Respond immediately, correctly and professionally to any patient emergency.
- Learn to carry out tests in accordance with appropriate protocol.
Policy and Service Development
- Able to work within Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and contribute to their review and implementation.
- Observes decisions affecting working practices within own areas of activity.
- Contributes to discussions on changes to policies and procedures within the section so as to ensure they reflect best practice, thus maintaining and improving the quality of service.

- The post holder will undertake the full Apprenticeship programme in order to progress through the training programme. They will be expected to undertake work-based experience to understand and communicate complex technical, scientific and sensitive information to colleagues within their department in both verbal and written forms.
- The responsibilities of the post will be discharged by and working to meet the main learning outcomes of the Apprenticeship programme.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • The applicant must meet the entry requirements for a Healthcare Science (nuclear medicine) BSc (hons): A levels, Scottish Highers or BTEC in a relevant science or equivalent qualification (typically 112 UCAS points with 40 in a relevant science).
  • The applicant must also hold English and Maths qualifications at Level 2 (GCSE Grades 9-4 or A*-C, or Functional/Key Skills at Level 2).
