Job overview

Providing Trust wide professional nursing leadership, and strategic direction for 
specialist cancer nursing in the Trust, ensuring compliance with national 
guidance and the long-term cancer plan strategy.
Leading the Trusts submissions for QSIS –ensuring compliance for all cancer 
services.
Lead the Trusts response and actions to the National cancer patients
experience survey

Main duties of the job

To be a highly visible, authoritative role model and act as a clinical advisor on issues and developments concerning specialist cancer nursing. The post  holder will be a highly experience nurse within the field of cancer nursing and recognised as a credible practitioner.
Develop and communicate an overall vision which links to the Trust and wider Cancer alliance strategy, to provide clarity and direction for the specialist nurses working within cancer services.
Ensure compliance with national guidance and initiatives for specialist nursing and ensure active participation with achieving the cancer survivorship agenda and development of future care in the community.
Provide expert advice with respect to specialist cancer nursing to internal and external stakeholders.
As a member of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Lead Cancer Nurses Forums, the post holder will be responsible for ensuring that UHMBT cancer nurses remain at the forefront of excellent cancer care, providing care consistent with national and regional best practice and complying with national clinical governance measures.
Monitor and instigate adverse incidents and complaints within the area of responsibility, implementing action plans to mitigate re-occurrence wherever possible and sharing learning outcomes.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. 

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay. 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Lead the Trust’s bids against Nationally/Regionally available monies to develop/enhance the cancer workforce

Delegated responsibility for the management of core cancer budget and monies received via Macmillan and National transformational monies to ensure the appropriate use of resources to ensure financial balance.

 Use and deploy resources to achieve optimum value for money and quality of care.

Responsible for submitting National financial bids to secure external sources of funding to support the Trust in delivery of cancer services

Essential criteria
  • First level RN
  • Educated to MSc level or equivalent level of experience
  • Significant experience in a senior nursing role
  • Evidence of clinical leadership in a relevant clinical field
  • Significant experience in NHS
  • Knowledge of NHS targets definitions and service improvement methodology
Desirable criteria
  • Management Qualification
  • QSIR practitioner or equivalent quality improvement practitioner qualification
