Job overview

This is a full-time appointment for a Locum Consultant in Ophthalmology to support delivery of services within our friendly modern and well-equipped Eye Centre.

Our service is expanding, and an enthusiastic and committed individual is sought to work with our existing clinical team at what is an exciting point in service development.

The Department has links with the Tertiary Trust at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and delivers the Northern part of the Derbyshire Diabetic Retinal Screening (DRS) programme.

We are seeking someone with good general ophthalmic skills and consideration can be given to candidates with varied sub-speciality interests so long as these align with departmental operational requirements.

We would be particularly interested to hear from individuals who have a proven track record of clinical and educational leadership in the speciality to support some anticipated workforce and educational developments anticipated within the next 6 months.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • FRCOphth or relevant/equivalent qualification
  • Full registration with GMC and licence to practice
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of a fellowship or other qualification in an ophthalmic sub-specialty or verified special interest from log book.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience in Ophthalmology equivalent to that required to gain UK CCST in Ophthalmology.
  • Meaningful experience of on call in an acute general hospital Ophthalmology Department sufficient to safely function upon the Consultant on call rota
  • Ability to lead a clinical team. Proven clinical leadership experience
Desirable criteria
  • Management experience or attendance at courses for SpRs/Consultant level practitioners.
  • Independent Cataract surgical skills validated by log book

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Substantive Clinical and educational supervision experience/skills
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion for both emergency and elective patient care.
  • Able to work independently at a senior level, taking responsibility for clinical care of patients.
