Job overview

This role will enable a ST3+ equivalent level doctor to gain experience as part of our General Surgery team at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.  You will work under the direction and supervision of the consultants to deliver a high-quality service to patients, as well as providing support to junior colleagues and nursing staff as required.  The elective component of this job will be based in breast surgery, with general surgery on calls. 

This post is fixed term for a period of 6 months approximately, to provide rota cover for a Trainee vacancy within the department. As such the successful candidate must be able to commence in post from the middle of May 2026.

There is a full shift rota in place & applicants must be able to participate in the full shift pattern. 

The post has been specifically designed for training level medics who would like to gain more surgical experience and consolidate their knowledge, skills and confidence prior to moving on to the next stage of their career, and for those looking to gain wider experience of the NHS. 

There will be the opportunity to participate in teaching, audit, guideline development and service improvement projects. 

The minimum skill requirement, including 2 years of post-graduate experience in surgery, is outlined on the attached Person Specification.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • GMC registered with license to practise
Desirable criteria
  • ALS, ATLS or APLS provider certification
  • EPLS provider certification
  • MRCS

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 4 years post-graduate clinical experience (2 of which in related specialty).
  • NHS experience
  • Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk.
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching delivery experience (any modality)
  • Level 1 Ultrasound

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need.
  • Evidence of reflective practice
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to General Surgery
