Job overview

The post holder is designated to manage the Respiratory ward, ensuring provision of safe, high quality and individualised care to patients and the line management and development of the ward staff.

The post holder will participate in the achievement of the Ward’s objectives, through innovative and progressive approaches to patient care, be responsible for the adherence to Nursing Care Audit and Care Accreditation processes. Be responsible for the development of clinical audit and research based activities and for the development of the ward as a learning environment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Management

  1.  Line management and supervision of all grades of staff within the sphere of authority, allocation of workload and reporting deficiencies to the Ward Leader as appropriate.
  2. Planning staff duty rotas to meet workload requirements.
  3. Assisting the Ward Leader to manage staff performance issues, including sickness absence, capability and discipline.
  4. Assisting the Ward Leader to ensure effective and efficient use of the units beds, ensuring services are delivered within contract agreement.
  5. Liaising closely with the bed management team to ensure timely admission and discharge of patients.

Patient Care

  1.  Supporting senior and less experienced staff in the provision of patient care.
  2. Assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of individual programmes of care.
  3. Exploring and promoting new ways of working to enhance patient care.

Multidisciplinary Liaison

  1.  Liaison with all disciplines and departments, which interface with care delivery.
  2. Encourage good working relationships between all members of the multidisciplinary team.

Communications

  1.   Assisting in the development of communication systems and maintaining existing effective systems within the clinical area, with medical, paramedical and support services staff and with patients, relatives and carers.

Clinical Governance

  1. Assisting the Ward Leader in setting, maintaining and monitoring standards of care and actively supporting the development and implementation of a written nursing philosophy.
  2. Ensuring an approach to care which recognises the needs and views of patients and their carers and which places the patient at the centre of all activities.
  3. Ensuring an approach to care which minimises clinical risk and maximises clinical effectiveness.
  4. Recognising clinical and other untoward incidents and reporting these through the Trust’s incident reporting mechanism and supporting other staff to do the same.
  5. Supporting the investigation of complaints and incidents through the Trust’s complaint s and incident reporting procedures, using these as a learning opportunity and supporting the Ward Leader to change practice as a result, when appropriate.
  6. Ensuring that unit staff adhere to infection control procedures at all times. identifying any training and development needs for nursing and support staff related to control of infection and liaising closely with the Infection Control Team to minimise the possibility of hospital acquired infection on the unit.
  7. Supporting the Ward Leader in ensuring that the service develops in line with the Trust’s Clinical Governance Framework, and that services comply with the standards required by the professional bodies, NHSLA, Investors in People, equality and diversity policy, CHAI and confidential enquires.

Education & Training

  1.  Participating in ongoing personal professional development programmes and in the teaching and development of all grades of staff.
  2. Acting as mentor where appropriate and as an adviser to students and other members of staff in matters relating to the clinical area.
  3. Creating and facilitating a learning environment conductive with the acquisition of further knowledge and skills.
  4. Working closely with the Ward Leaders, Clinical Educator and Senior Ward Leader to identify the learning and development needs of the unit staff and in formulating plans to meet these.

Research/Audit

  1.  Demonstrating a commitment to the development of research skills whilst being receptive to the research plans of others.
  2. Assisting in the application and evaluation of current research findings and participation in appropriate research/evaluation studies within the clinical environment.
  3. Support the development of multidisciplinary clinical audit at unit level and encourage nursing staff to undertake audit projects.

Personal Performance

  1.  Take every opportunity to ensure the acquisition of new skills and knowledge.  Actively participate in the Trust’s appraisal process.
  2. Maintain patient, staff and Trust confidentiality at all times.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 1st Level RGN
  • Demonstrable post registration professional development in general medicine
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma
  • Degree
  • ALS course

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience in managing acute medical patients
  • Must be able to work with patients who require Non-invasive ventilation
  • Must have Tracheostomy experience
