Job overview

An opportunity has arisen to join our dedicated team of sonographers delivering excellent patient care in the Imaging and Antenatal ultrasound departments at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and community bases.

The successful applicant will hold a CASE accredited Post Graduate Ultrasound qualification, and ideally be HCPC registered, although registration with the SOR public voluntary register of sonographers will be accepted

The department delivers ultrasound services in the clinical areas of  abdominal, gynaecology, obstetrics, vascular, MSK, head and neck, small parts and intervention. The successful candidate should ideally be competent in more than one of these clinical areas.

There will be a requirement to work at several locations within Chesterfield and the surrounding area, including Matlock and Buxton, so personal transport is a consideration. 

The advertised posts are to enable increasing ultrasound activity at two Community Diagnostic Centres, which are planned to operate 7 days a week, 8am - 8pm. The successful candidate(s) will join the team working at several locations. Requirements of the role will be to work at weekends on a rota basis, and some evenings up to 8pm

Whole time and part time posts will be considered depending on service.

Main duties of the job

Clinical

  • To work as an autonomous ultrasound practitioner to provide a consistently high standard of sonography to aid clinicians in achieving an accurate diagnosis

Educational

  • To undertake all mandatory training and maintain own CPD portfolio, keep up to date with advances in the field of ultrasound, and share expertise and knowledge

Research / Audit

  • To support, encourage and participate in audit and research with the department

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

  • To provide a consistently high standard of sonography to aid clinicians in achieving an accurate diagnosis
  • To produce comprehensive independent ultrasound reports in accordance with department protocols
  • To receive, manage and prioritise referrals based on clinical information provided and department booking protocols
  • To undertake examinations in a professional manner and provide a consistent high standard of care and attention to patients at all times thus maintaining the quality standards of the Trust
  • To liaise and communicate with other members of the multidisciplinary team both within and outside the department
  • To provide clinical supervision to staff within the team and other disciplines
  • To observe Trust policy on reporting of incidents
  • To be responsible for the care of all ultrasound equipment and accessories including maintaining a high level of cleanliness, reporting faults to the line manager without delay
  • To promote and maintain good working relationships with other teams and departments within the hospital and external referrers

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc in Radiography or equivalent degree in medical physiology
  • PGCert / PGDip in Medical Ultrasound - must include Obstetrics
  • Registration with appropriate professional body.
Desirable criteria
  • Masters degree
  • Further professional qualifications

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience in performing medical ultrasound examinations and providing autonomous reports
  • Experience of organising and prioritising clinical workload
Desirable criteria
  • Extensive experience in performing a wide range of ultrasound examinations and providing autonomous reports
  • Experience of training others
  • Experience of working with PACS system

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to teach and support staff
  • Ability to work on own initiative or part of a team
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills
