We currently have an opportunity to work with children  with speech , language and communication needs.  This will be based in clinics and education settings. 

Our Speech and Language Therapy Assistant post is three days a week and will be based in Clay Cross with the Children's  Community Speech and Language Therapy team.  The post will cover Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist the SLT in providing a clinical service (assessment and treatment) to a SLT caseload
  • Carry out programmes of therapy under the supervision of the SLT 
  • Maintain accurate and contemporaneous records in line with RCSLT professional and Trust standards.
  • Participate in training in area of clinical experience
  • Demonstrates duties to new starters and less experienced SLTAs, and other support staff.
  • Understand the rationale behind therapy tasks and activities set by the SLT based on basic theory of speech language development/breakdown.
  • Develop a working knowledge of relevant procedures including safeguarding for children and adults.

 Care for Children and Young People ( CYP)  :

  • Assist in the planning and delivery of SLT interventions.
  • Make modifications within programmes to suit CYP needs. 
  • Adapt practice to meet individual  CYP needs,  including due regard for cultural, linguistic and cognitive differences.
  • Advise and support parents and carers,  education and other support staff on how to deliver SLT programmes
  • Ensure that CYP are involved in the planning and prioritisation of their care plans wherever possible.

Person specification

Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • GCSE English Language/or equivalent NVQ level 3 or relevant qualification.
  • Relevant experience of working with a range of speech, language and communication needs.
  • Experience of working in an education setting
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of supporting AAC approaches.
  • Experience of working with other client groups with communication difficulties.
  • Experience of working as an SLT assistant or working under direction of a SLT delivering speech/language programmes.

Skills and Attributes

Essential criteria
  • Good IT skills
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal
  • Able to work under direction
  • Good observation skills
Desirable criteria
  • Fluent in another community language (eg BSL)
  • Coaching skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to work as part of MDT and multi-agency teams
  • Own transport and willing to use it on Trust business, ability to move between community settings in the working day
