Job overview

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Senior Clinical Fellow in Otolaryngology (ENT) to join our dynamic and supportive department. until 2nd February 2027 to cover a gap in training.  This role offers a possible extension and is an excellent opportunity to gain comprehensive experience in the diagnosis, management, and surgical treatment of a wide range of ENT conditions within a busy NHS setting.

The successful candidate will participate in all aspects of ENT care, including outpatient clinics, elective and emergency surgery, inpatient management, and on-call duties, while progressing through higher specialist training.  This post does not carry a national training number.

Main duties of the job

Provide high-quality care for patients presenting with ear, nose and throat conditions in both elective and emergency settings
Participate in outpatient clinics, ward rounds, and operating theatre lists
 
Perform and assist in ENT surgical procedures appropriate to level of training
 
Contribute to the on-call rota, managing ENT emergencies such as epistaxis, airway compromise, and post-operative complications
 
Supervise and support junior medical staff and contribute to multidisciplinary team working
 
Engage in teaching of medical students and junior colleagues
 
Actively participate in audit, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical governance activities

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for delivering high-quality ENT (Otolaryngology) care across outpatient, inpatient and emergency settings, including the assessment, diagnosis and management of a wide range of ear, nose and throat conditions. They will participate fully in outpatient clinics, ward rounds and operating theatre sessions, undertaking and assisting in surgical procedures appropriate to their level of training while developing operative skills under consultant supervision.
 
The role includes active participation in the on-call rota, providing timely assessment and management of ENT emergencies such as airway compromise, epistaxis and post-operative complications, with appropriate escalation where required.
 
The Senior Clinical Fellow will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure effective patient care, contribute to ward management and discharge planning, and maintain accurate clinical documentation. In addition, the post holder will supervise and support resident doctors, contribute to teaching and training of medical students and colleagues, and take part in audit, quality improvement and clinical governance activities, demonstrating a commitment to professional development and high standards of patient care.

Person specification

Qualifications & Experience

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent qualification
  • DOHNS or MRCS (ENT)
  • Full MRCS
  • Applicants should have a minimum of 2 years training in ENT as a Specialty Registrar or equivalent grade post
  • Previous experience in Head & Neck Oncology, Rhinology or Otology Subspecialties
  • A minimum 6 months in a UK Healthcare setting
  • Hold full registration with the GDC & GMC at time of application and hold a license to practice
Desirable criteria
  • FRCS (ORL-HNS) in progress or equivalent postgraduate ENT qualification

Academic Research, Audit & Teaching

  • Evidence of research achievements e.g. publications of relevant study or laboratory and/or clinical research material in peer review journals, presentations at regional or national level
