Job overview

The NHS financial landscape is challenging and subject to increasing scrutiny. This role will jointly be responsible with the other Deputy Directors of Finance for ensuring the integrity of the general ledger, giving assurance to the Director of Operational Finance and Director of Strategic Finance that the financial information supplied is accurate and in accordance with professional accounting standards.

The role holder will lead the Financial Services teams across a number of areas, including financial accounting and controls, capital expenditure, treasury management and purchase and sales ledger. A continuous improvement mindset will be required, alongside professional curiosity to constructively challenge ways of working and established views.

Main duties of the job

Compassionate and supportive leadership, professionalising high quality and responsive outputs from the Financial Services teams.
• Provision of sound financial accounting expertise to support a quality
accounting service in accordance with professional accounting standards and NHS requirements.
• Strong leadership of statutory financial duties including the
submission of the Annual Consolidated Accounts and liaison with the external auditors.
• Compliance and efficient development of a range of necessary
procedures, controls and plans across Financial Services.
• Robust reporting and forecasting to proactively monitor cash, capital expenditure and working capital
• Lead and develop the teams effectively and build strong working relationships with a range of stakeholders and partners

• Deputising for the Director of Operational Finance when relevant

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Professional Accountancy Qualification
  • Degree level or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant senior level experience in financial services
  • Experience of managing complex financial accounting issues and large external audits
  • Management and development of large teams to ensure delivery requirements are met
  • Experience of advising and influencing Board level personnel
  • Experience in leading successful change management projects
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in working in health care and or wider public sector finances

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Working knowledge of IFRS and relevant accounting standards
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of strong post qualification professional development
  • Knowledge of financial consolidation for group accounts
