Job overview
University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an exceptional Deputy Chief Financial Officer to provide senior financial leadership across one of the largest NHS providers in the region.
Working closely with the Chief Financial Officer, you will lead the day-to-day operation of the Finance Directorate and play a central role in shaping and delivering the Trust’s financial strategy. This is a pivotal role, with responsibility for financial planning, income and contracting, performance management, transformation, CIP delivery, procurement, costing, financial intelligence and statutory reporting.
We are looking for a fully qualified CCAB accountant with significant senior finance leadership experience in a large, complex organisation, ideally within the NHS or wider public sector. You will bring strong technical expertise, commercial judgement and the ability to lead through influence across clinical, operational and system partners.
You will be a visible, credible and inclusive leader, able to support high-quality decision-making, strengthen financial grip and help ensure the best use of resources for patients. You will also deputise for the CFO as required and represent the Trust with regional and national partners. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape a high-performing finance function and contribute to the Trust’s ambition to deliver Exceptional Care Together.
Main duties of the job
The Deputy Chief Financial Officer will provide senior leadership for the Finance Directorate, supporting the Chief Financial Officer in setting and delivering the Trust’s financial strategy. The role will lead the day-to-day operation of key finance functions, including financial planning, income and contracting, performance management, procurement, costing, financial intelligence, statutory reporting, and PMO/CIP delivery.
The postholder will work closely with clinical, operational and system partners to strengthen financial grip, support effective decision-making and ensure resources are used well for the benefit of patients. They will lead the development of annual budgets, medium-term financial plans, forecasting, recovery actions and business cases, while ensuring robust governance, assurance, audit compliance and delivery of statutory financial requirements.
The role will also involve leading and developing senior finance teams, building strong relationships across the Trust and wider NHS system, representing the Trust externally, and deputising for the Chief Financial Officer as required.

- Significant strategic financial leadership experience within a large, complex organisation
- Strong knowledge of NHS financial regimes, NHSE reporting requirements and ICB/system financial arrangements
- Experience of financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and medium-term financial strategy
- Proven track record of delivering CIP, productivity or financial improvement programmes
- Experience leading large finance teams and working within robust governance and assurance frameworks

- Experience within a financial recovery, turnaround or significant change environment
