Job overview

An exciting opportunity has become available for a Consultant in Maternal Medicine and Obstetrics at UHDB. You will be joining a friendly and supportive team of Consultants, Specialty Doctors, Resident Medical Staff, Allied Health Professionals, Specialist Nursing and Midwifery team and senior managers who are all committed to providing the best service to its patients.

As well as providing a high-quality obstetrics service,   you will work together with senior colleagues in shaping the future of the maternal medicine service for our women and pregnant people . You will have shared responsibility for the operational performance, clinical quality, and resource management of the service, providing leadership and management.

Maternity services are provided on the Royal Derby and Queens Hospital Burton sites. Both sites work to common protocols. Provision with consultant colleagues of a service to Staffordshire, Derbyshire & surrounding areas with responsibility for diagnosis & treatment of patients at the hospitals & clinics at which you have duties.

Main duties of the job

Support maternal medicine service/team & provide a general clinical service.  Post holder will cover areas/activities such as labour ward, ANC, PAU, elective caesarean section lists & review antenatal & complex postnatal patients, providing care & management to patients across UHDB, including clinics in community facilities. 

Participate in  OOH on call service, cover consultant colleagues during reasonable periods of leave including care of patients & supervision of doctors in training. Participation in under & post graduate education,  training sessions for FY, Specialty Residents & medical students.

Responsible for the professional supervision, training & management of resident medical staff, teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & CPD activity locally & nationally as appropriate.  Commitment to taking part in annual appraisal process, undertaken by ACD for Obstetrics.

Responsible for continuing professional development with the support of the Trust, it is mandatory for all Consultants to keep up to date with evidence-based practice. Responsible for maintaining awareness of & acting in accordance with professional guidelines such as “Duties of a Doctor”, “Good Medical Practice”, & the “GMC Performance Procedures”.

Exceptional requirements to undertake additional duties for limited periods within geographical area specified above or undertake duties at other hospitals in the event of a major disaster or incident.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role on offer is for a 10 PA contract.  There is also the opportunity for additional programmed activity subject to job planning. It will include 1:16 on-call commitment.

You will be responsible for the continuing care and treatment of patients in your charge and personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to and training of your staff.

You will take an active role in Clinical Governance, lead and participate in audit projects relevant to your clinical interests and promote research and academic activity within the specialty to help ensure our services are continuously being improved.

Responsible for the professional supervision, training and management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to postgraduate and CPD activity locally and nationally as appropriate.

You will lead on the inpatient antenatal and postnatal services.

It is essential for applicants for substantive Consultant posts to be either on the GMC Specialist Register, or be within six months of their CCT date at the interview date

Qualifications and Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • MBBS / MBChB or equivalent
  • MRCOG or equivalent higher qualification
  • Life Support Qualifications - Advanced Life Support
  • ATSM in Advance Labour Ward or equivalent
  • ATSM Maternal Medicine or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice at time of application
  • GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology Specialty OR within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview OR If applying for Full GMC Registration & Licence to Practice simultaneously with a CESR application, supporting documentary evidence must be provided at interview, to confirm an application has been submitted & is under consideration by the GMC.
Desirable criteria
  • Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the specialty
  • Training Qualification
  • ATSM in high risk pregnancy

Clinical Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to offer expert opinion & take full & independent responsibility for clinical care of patients across the wide spectrum of Obstetric disorders
  • Experience of working as a ST7 and above in the NHS
  • 1 year NHS experience
  • Up to date clinical knowledge in the relevant specialty & evidence of an understanding of its application
Desirable criteria
  • Interest in an area of obstetrics complimentary to existing consultants
  • Experience in scanning

Management & Administrative Experience

Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to the specialty
  • Attended a management/leadership course
  • Experience of formal presentations

Teaching, Audit & Research Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence & experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students
  • Ability to & experience of teaching clinical skills
  • Experience of & commitment to clinical audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIP)
  • Evidence and ability to assess & apply evidence-based research into every day clinical practice
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to the specialty
Desirable criteria
  • Specific teaching qualification
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to under-graduates
  • Attended a recognised teaching training course
