An exciting opportunity has become available for 6 Consultants in Obstetrics at UHDB, with on calls based at the Royal Derby Hospital. You will be joining a friendly and supportive team of Consultants, Specialty Doctors, Resident Medical Staff, Allied Health Professionals, Specialist Nursing and Midwifery team and senior managers who are all committed to providing the best service to its patients.
As well as providing a high-quality obstetrics service, you will work together with senior colleagues in shaping the future of antenatal and postnatal inpatient services.
The 6 consultant interests include:
- Diabetes & Hypertension
- EPAGU (Early Pregnancy and Gynaecology Unit) Lead
- Fetal Medicine
- Twin, Obesity & PDT Lead
- Pelvic Health Lead
- Post-Natal care & experience Lead

Maternity services are provided on the Royal Derby and Queens Hospital Burton sites. Both sites work to common protocols. Provision with consultant colleagues of a service to Staffordshire, Derbyshire & surrounding areas with responsibility for diagnosis & treatment of patients at the hospitals & clinics at which you have duties.

Main duties of the job
You will be responsible for the planning, delivery, development and improvement of inpatient (antenatal and postnatal) services together with providing a high-quality Obstetrics service including on-call out of hours, in conjunction with consultant colleagues and a multi-disciplinary team. There is flexibility within the department to accommodate the skills of the successful candidate. You will also be required to:
- Participate in teaching, examination and appraisal duties
- Bring experience to clinical diagnosis and effective multidisciplinary team-working
- Develop and implement standards of obstetric & gynaecological practice and have a major role in developing specific pathways, guidelines and risk management including maintaining and developing the risk for inpatient services
- Audit the effectiveness of practice and develop and modify, as required
- Train and educate staff in a multidisciplinary team
- Provide clinical leadership, leading by example

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The roles on offer are for 10 PA contract. There is also the opportunity for additional programmed activity subject to job planning. It will include 1:20 on-call commitment.
You will be responsible for the continuing care and treatment of patients in your charge and personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to and training of your staff.
You will take an active role in Clinical Governance, lead and participate in audit projects relevant to your clinical interests and promote research and academic activity within the specialty to help ensure our services are continuously being improved.
Responsible for the professional supervision, training and management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to postgraduate and CPD activity locally and nationally as appropriate.
You will lead on the inpatient antenatal and postnatal services.
It is essential for applicants for substantive Consultant posts to be either on the GMC Specialist Register, or be within six months of their CCT date at the interview date

- Evidence of entry on GMC Specialist Register OR be within 6 months of attaining CCT at time of interview and entry on GMC Specialist Register by date of commencement OR Evidence that the GMC is processing the Specialist Registration application (MUST be provided prior to interview
