Job overview

This is a post at the level of senior clinical fellow but may be suitable for a candidate post CCT who wishes to gain additional experience.


They would be expected to provide out of hours care on the Paediatric middle grade rota covering general paediatrics, CED and the neonatal unit. In hours they will provide clinical care within the paediatric business unit as well as having dedicated time for either education and simuation, quality improvement or patient safety. The exact arrangements to be agreed with suitable candidates.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the provision of acute paediatric care across the Children’s Emergency Department and general paediatrics while leading and supporting quality improvement initiatives.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The fellow will work a full‑shift rota comparable to that of the paediatric registrars, including out‑of‑hours cover for the Children’s Emergency Department and general paediatric wards. Protected time will be allocated for quality improvement projects and personal development. The exact timetable will be agreed on appointment and reviewed at appraisal.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS/MBChB or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise at the time of application
  • APLS provider
Desirable criteria
  • APLS instructor or equivalent relevant life support course
  • Higher degree or qualification in quality improvement
  • Leadership or management
  • MRCPCH

Clinical knowledge and skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of working at middle grade level in paediatrics with experience providing acute paediatric and neonatal care in the NHS for at least 6 months
  • Effective clinical decision‑making and prioritisation skills
  • Up to date clinical knowledge in the relevant specialty & evidence of an understanding of its application
  • Experienced in making clinical decisions & managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need

Management & Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development & the requirements of clinical governance, reporting errors and learning from these

Teaching Experience, Audit and Research

Essential criteria
  • Evidence and experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students
  • Evidence and ability to assess & apply evidence-based research into every day clinical practice
Desirable criteria
  • Enthusiasm for paediatric emergency and general paediatric research or evidence of significant Interest in Quality Improvement in a relevant field
  • Any teaching courses or qualifications.
  • Publications in peer‑reviewed journals or involvement in quality improvement or health‑services research projects
  • Membership of professional networks such as PERUKI
  • Good Clinical Practice GCP) training

Language and Communication Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience of formal presentations
