Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Learning Disability Physiotherapy Team at Derbyshire Health Care NHS Foundation Trust as a Physiotherapy Technical Instructor. This role requires a dynamic and capable individual to work alongside physiotherapists to deliver rehabilitation to a wide range of patients across the service.

The Adult Learning Disability Physiotherapy Team provide a high-quality service for anyone over the age of 18 who are on the Learning Disability Register, working within a wider MDT within the Adult Neurodevelopmental Service, providing specialist input, support and management interventions and advice in any community setting within the boundary of Derbyshire.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the Adult Learning Disability Service in delivering effective patient care. This includes carrying out independent clinical work, undertaking specific, skilled support work and administrative and clerical duties.

Working with the therapists to support those with more complex needs and manage a caseload of clients who require general support and advice. This includes motivating and supporting them, their carers and relatives, to make lifestyle changes, providing teaching on approved programmes to reduce the risk of complications and ill-health. Client facing activity includes individual and group sessions involving a range of physical activities.

Promote the benefits of good health and give support to improve peoples knowledge, skills and confidence to improve their lifestyles and manage their conditions by using community development principles/values to address and reduce health inequalities in Derbyshire. To adapt communication with service users with complex and challenging behavioural needs, as well as their support network, respecting diversity, backgrounds, chosen lifestyles, abilities and cultures.

Essential criteria
  • Full driving licence/ability to travel around the community independently.
  • Basic swimming and water confidence.

Education/Qualification

Essential criteria
  • GCSE English and Mathematics, grade C or above, or equivalent.
  • Literate and numerate
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant National Vocational Qualification.

Previous Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of care work.
  • Proven track record of service.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience as a therapy assistant/technical instructor.
  • Experience of working with people with learning disabilities and knowledge of learning disabilities.

Skills, Knowledge and abilities

Essential criteria
  • Verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work under instruction but without direct ‘in person’ supervision.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills including handling skills, IT skills.
